In Mathematics we just begun to explore 2D shapes. The students have already discussed and grouped shapes that they already know and begun the label some of their features. Some of these shapes included circle, triangle, rectangle and square.
We have now begun to look at other 2D shapes that are less familiar and discussed their edges, corners, length of the edges and the direction of the edges such as horizontal, vertical or diagonal. The students where very interested in learning the names of these shapes including; pentagon, hexagon, octagon, trapezium and rhombus.
Here they are grouping shapes together by their features.
In writing this week we watched a demonstration of how to plant seeds. Then each student was given their own seed kit and followed the steps to plant their own seedlings. The seeds were a mix of flowers, herbs and vegetables. Some of the students weren't too sure what they had until they checked the picture on the label such as Dianthus, which we now know is a flower. Some of the student also found mixing the water with a soil very stressful as they did not want to get their hands dirty.
We used this experience to draw the steps that we took and write down some key words such as; dirt, seeds, water and pot. The students then used sequencing words such as; firstly, next, then, after and finally, to write a recount of the steps they took to plant their seedlings.
Check out the photos of the students following the steps to plant their own seeds.
This week our class SRC's Levi and Dusty ran a class meeting. This week the focus of the meeting was 'what helps us to learn?'
Levi and Dusty ask the class to think about 'what helps us to learn in our classroom?' The students came up with a great list including:
Levi and Dusty then asked the students 'what would you like to see change or added to your classroom to help you to learn?' The student came up with some great ideas that can easily be added to our room
The students have really taken ownership over their learning and learning spaces and I can't wait to add their ideas to our classroom. Stay turned to see some photos.
