Literacy
Last week we read the story My Dog Rags. We focussed on the elements needed to construct a simple sentence that makes sense. Together we created a sentence identifying the 'who' is the sentence about and 'what' are they doing? The students were given the opportunity to write a sentence about their imaginary dog Rags. As a class, we constructed a sentence together using our prior knowledge about dogs and making connections with the dog in the story. These activities scaffold the students writing skills.
Into the Tent is our focus story book for the week. After listening to the story, the students responded by drawing their families in a tent. We have focused on each page's sentence structure, identifying different punctuation and interesting words.
Maths
The Preps have been breaking whole numbers into parts. During the maths lessons last week, the students were given scenarios, and they had to show their answers in as many different ways as possible and prove they had all the possible solutions. This is an example of one scenario - 9 friends are playing in the cubby house, some friends are playing inside the cubby house, and some friends are playing under the cubby house. What does this look like?
In Maths this week, we are exploring odd and even numbers. We read the story books, My Even Day and One Odd Day to understand that odd and even numbers are all around us. The students created an 'even classroom' and an imaginary 'odd creature'.
Inquiry
This week in Inquiry, we are learning new ways that we can sustain the environment so that we can help to care for the environment. The students represented their understanding of a sustainable environment by drawing a variety of sustainable practises in their ideal garden and home. I was impressed with the students' transference of knowledge in their drawings and explanations.
