Reflection

Lord, as we prepare for the coming of a new semester, make us ready, attentive and available to hear you.
Thank You for the gift of being able to rise each day with the assurance that You walk through it with us.
Thank You for the gifts of creativity and uniqueness, and the energy to put them to good use.
May all that we are today, all that we try to do today, may all our encounters, reflections, even the frustrations and failings all be place in your hands.
May the work we do and the way we do it, bring new hope, new life, and courage to all we come in contact with this semester. We thank you, Lord. Amen

Chaplain’s Corner

Reflection for 11 July, Monday of 15th Week of Ordinary Time. These are strong words from the Lord in today’s Gospel reading. The Lord is indicating to His Apostles and to us that He did not come to bring superficial harmony but reconciliation on a deeper level between people and with God. It is a reconciliation that requires not forgetting the past but repentance.

Repentance means a revived Christian commitment. Christ’s presence always calls for a decision, a decision that may even require a separation from family and friends who would seek to trivialize or reverse that decision.

This does not mean that we abandon care for our family and friends but it does mean that we follow the way of Christ when it comes to leisure time activity, standing for the sanctity of human life, sexual morality, justice in our society, and the value of our life with and in the Church.

Our natural instinct is to blend in. Jesus calls us to follow Him and not the crowd. We are to blend in with the Church. We all want and need to be part of a community. That is a natural human instinct. If, however, we are remote from the Church then we will blend in with neighbours, friends and family who share that distance from the Lord.

If we want to remain strong in our fidelity to Christ, we need to surround ourselves with people who will support us in that effort, who will enable us to not only maintain but strengthen our commitment to Christ. That is why we need the community of the Church and more frequently a smaller primary community within that larger Church.

The Lord is calling us in this Gospel reading not to abandon our family. He is calling us to decision, to take Him and His Gospel seriously and to seek out that support network that will enable us to embrace that Gospel more realistically and fully.

To make a “decision for Christ” is a courageous act. It takes even more courage to find the means to keep that decision alive throughout our life.

Mary, our Good Mother, pray for us.
St. Marcellin Champagnat, pray for us.
St. Mary of the Cross, pray for us.
And may we always remember to pray for one another.
