Sport News

Mr Derek Lennon, Head of Sport

Welcome back to all for what will be another busy term of sport. It is only Week 1 and already we have many sporting opportunities on offer for all students from Years 5-12.

AIC Tennis, Track and Field, Basketball and Rugby League training for all teams from Year 5-12 has now commenced.

Over the coming weeks, coaches and teachers will be personally asking some of our talented student-athletes to join the AIC Track and Field training program. There is no doubt that our College community gives greatly to each of its students. From time to time, I believe, it’s a fair request that the College asks something in return. If a student is good enough and talented enough to represent his College – then he should. It would be a great shame to see our best athletes, musicians or perhaps academic students not use their gifts to benefit the College and to better themselves. We understand the need for a balanced education and we do not want to over-burden our students, but we want Marist’s best to shine. If there are issues surrounding a student’s workload which impedes him from participating, please contact the Sports Office on sports@marash.qld.edu.au

The Sports Office and coordinators are reasonable in their approach when working with families and students to come up with solutions and alternative programs which is beneficial for all. Again, I urge all students and parents to support this process. If you have a gift, please use it to benefit others.

Coordinators for Term 3 Sports

For all enquiries pertaining to these sports please contact the respective coordinator.

This week and weekend we have a number of sporting trials occurring against other AIC schools. All details can be found on the College app. This will be a further opportunity for coaches to assess players and adjust teams. I would expect some movement of players between teams in readiness for next weekend’s Round 1 fixtures v St Laurence’s College. Coaches are instructed to choose their teams each week based on attendance, player performance and attitude.

As always, I urge all students to get involved in the sports program and enjoy the challenges you face along the way. Enjoy the term ahead boys!

AIC Tennis, Rugby League and Basketball

All Year 5-6 basketball games are played on Friday afternoons. All Year 7-12 basketball and Year 5 -12 tennis and rugby league games are played on Saturday.  Please go to the College app to view all times and venues throughout the season.

Basketball Camp

Over the recent school holidays, we held the inaugural MCA Basketball Camp. We had over 60 boys in attendance from Year 7 – 11, as well as the 1st V.

It was a fantastic few days, the boys completed a program that involved; basketball performance testing, a personal shooting program, ball skills and competitive shooting. The Day 2 program includes dribbling, shooting drills and defensive games, finishing with 5-on-5 games. The camp concluded with the 1st V taking on a Old Boys 1st V team which was a highlight.

Special thanks to 1st V Coach: James Lidstone, 1st V Assistant Coach: Mike Lidstone, MCA Basketball A team coaches: Hayden Evans and Phil Davis, Old Boy Matt Richards and Mr John Lambourne for their support of this initiative.

Uniforms for Term 3 Sports

Students representing the College in AIC Tennis, Rugby League and Basketball must wear the full and correct College uniform. Students who are not dressed correctly will not be permitted to take to the court or field. Uniform standards will be kept and maintained at a high level. The College requires the support of the parent body to ensure these standards are met.

Holiday Clinic

The Holiday clinic was awesome to see so many boys having fun and honing their skills on our freshly cleaned courts. I would like to thank my staff who with myself tirelessly spent many hours on the gurney to get this task complete. Due to the size of the area we are talking about six courts; we decided to get the professionals into finish off the job and the courts now look as good as they did when they were first built (minus a coat of paint or two)

Thank you to all the boys who participated and it was so pleasing to see some new faces and possibly some new stars.

Marist Doubles Championship

Marist Doubles Championship is fast approaching and this year we will be running two divisions for all boys to compete from Year 7 – opens. There will be an open division and Division 1 category for those who feel they will not be able to beat the best players. This will be available for students in Years 7-9 who do not wish to play in the open division. These will be held on Monday 8th and Tuesday 9th July. 3:30pm -7:30pm each day.

Players must enter with a partner of their choice by emailing us at MCA Tennis.

Congratulations also to Mr Liam Webb who after winning this year’s singles championships has been selected as our Captain for 2022. Please congratulate him as he is a role model for our younger students and a fine young man in the making.

AIC News

All teams for this Saturday will be displayed at the gym and over at Primary on Thursday 14th July. I would like also to remind all students and parents that these are trial games. Boys picked to be in the shadow team as reserves can make our team at any time with training and hard work as you never know when an opportunity will present itself and we will do everything in our power to make sure these boys are ready to go. Training for all shadow team members will be every Friday morning 6:45am-8:15am. All boys are expected to be there for their training days for all year levels at all training sessions.

We are offering Semi-Private lessons this term for all students chosen in the AIC program. Cost is $150.00  ½ hr or $250.00 1 hr lesson per person for the term. A reminder that all coaching is cancelled the week of the Ekka.

Group and Squad Coaching

Term 3 is filling fast and we are only able to offer limited positions due to court availability and coaches.

As always if you have any queries please feel free to contact us at  MCATennis.qld.edu.au.

Student Achievements

Jackson Grounds

Jackson has signed a contract with Major League Baseball (MLB) in the USA with the Pittsburgh Pirates. This is an amazing achievement for Jackson and something we as a College are very proud of. On the back of his Brisbane Bandits and Australian team selections this is the pinnacle for the sport of baseball and we all sincerely wish Jackson the very best wishes as he embarks on his career.

Matthew Alvarez 7E and Damon Johnston 6G represented Met North at the recent QSS State Championships for Hockey, coming home with the title.
