Dear Parents/Carers,
Over the last few weeks, I have been learning more about being a principal through working in the classroom with teachers and students. As you know, one of the distinguishing features of Rowville Primary School is that there are no pre-purchased programs but rather a focus on setting clear goals for each student and tailoring the learning to suit. This is consistent across all classrooms and in specialist classes as well.
One of my highlights for this week was working with 2C as they planned and launched their soft plastics recycling initiative. They had been working on persuasive writing and looking at how different materials impact on the environment. Mrs Coveney and
Miss Nicholas challenged them to develop a campaign to encourage students to recycle soft plastic. The class decided to start small and focus on Year 2 as a trial and extend to other grades in term 3, when it is successful.
Oliver prepared an excellent speech which he delivered to each Year 2 class whilst
Harriet and Jax supported him by providing additional information to address student’s questions. He reminded students that soft plastic was any plastic that can be scrunched into a ball including glad wrap, chip packets, sandwich bags, cracker bags, fruit and vegetable bags, old green bags and more. It takes courage to speak in front of an audience and these students supported each other to ensure it was a success. The whole class showed great teamwork to get the project off the ground in a short period of time and they did themselves and Miss Nicholas proud.
Our Year 5 and 6 students have been excelling in Visual Arts. They have been studying the whimsical world of Tim Burton, an American film director, producer, and artist. He is known for his gothic fantasy films such as Beetlejuice, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Edward Scissorhands, Alice in Wonderland and many more.
They explored his animations in his film the Corpse Bride as inspiration for their self portraits and used black and white oil pastels for shading and tone. I am sure you will agree with me that these portraits are absolutely fantastic.
