Year 1/2 –Celebrating Learning

What we have been up to:

Term 3 continues to be exciting and full of learning! We have been learning about celebrations around the world, particularly Diwali and Halloween, and the different ways people celebrate. Our Key Questions for our learning this term are:

  • How and why do we celebrate our Elders?
  • Why are celebrations important and how are they passed down from one generation to another?
  • What can I learn about different cultures through their celebrations?

Students will keep sharing their interviews with someone from their community about their favourite celebration over the next two weeks. This project is open in how students present, so far, we have seen some great video interviews, posters and presentations.

Maths:

We are further developing our understanding of multiplication and division this term. Over the last few weeks, we have looked at sharing objects into equal groups and different ways of representing these groups including number sentences and arrays. Students were set a task to develop their proposal for how best to evenly decorate the classroom using 29 balloons. They then shared with the class their ideas for the number of bunches, how many balloons in each and where they should go.

We have continued looking at dates and seasons, identifying special dates on our term calendar. Our measurement unit has begun with exploring the length of different objects within the classroom.

English:

Students are now moving into the Little Learners Love Literacy Stage 7.4 sounds in phonics. These sounds include: a-e as in gate, a as in acorns, c as in space, i-e as in five, g as in giraffe.

Students have been writing incredibly creative stories, developing their characters, settings and problems. Many students are working on their entries for the school Book Week writing competition. They have been responding to texts to prompt their ideas, exploring different planning templates, drafting, revising and editing.

What’s to come in the next two weeks:

Students will be presenting their celebration interviews and learning about the similarities and differences between celebrations around the world.

In writing, we are looking at narrative texts and practising the writer’s process. We will then move into exploring poetry, beginning with students writing poems about themselves in different styles.

In maths, we will practise applying different strategies to solve multiplication and division problems. Our main focus will be on using doubles and halves. Students will also look at measurement, exploring different tools to measure length and area.
