What's Happening In our Classroom
Hello to all our Mackellar families and welcome to Term 3!
We have not wasted any time getting right back into the swing of things especially with production preparations. We are all getting very excited!
Here is an overview of our learning in Term Three.
English:
This term students are learning all about recount texts. They are developing their understanding of the purpose, structure and language features of this text type using a variety of mentor texts for both their reading and writing. Students so far, have read mentor texts about ‘Helping Mum’, ‘The Surprise in my School Bag’ and ‘Road Safety’.
The students are learning about an orientation at the beginning of their recount, are including time connective sentences to sequence the order of their events with describing sentences, and then completing their recount with a conclusion. Their writing pieces are beginning to include greater detail as they are using the describing perspectives of colour, number, shape, position, texture, doing and size.
They have written texts about playing ‘Follow the Leader’, their ‘Morning Routine’ and ‘The Colour Fun Run.’ There has been a strong focus on using past tense verbs and adding suffixes to these verbs.
Mathematics:
Students have consolidated their work and understanding of 2-Dimensional Shapes and extended their learning of 3-Dimensional objects. They have located 3D objects in our environment, identified and described the features of 3D objects and made 3D objects using a variety of nets.
Students have been consolidating their understanding of two- and three-digit numbers for addition and subtraction using efficient strategies such as open number lines. We have been completing lots of activities and playing a variety of games to problem solve addition and subtraction number stories.
On Wednesday, we celebrated 500 Days of School with students working in small groups to experience a range of fun rotational activities related to the number 500. For example; recording different number patterns to 500, creating equations that equal 500, investigating how many animals would make 500 legs, using their creative skills to turn the number 500 into a picture and thinking about what they would do if they had $500.
Inquiry:
In term three, students have been introduced to our new topic of Inquiry. They have completed the Lesson Zero phase of our unit on Geography. They were given the opportunity to ‘unpack’ the curriculum achievement standards for Level 2 and contribute their ideas and knowledge of key words and concepts. Students have also been introduced to ‘Zoonomy’ a term that we are using to describe the verbs we use for our learning. For example, the students have investigated the verb of ‘Remembering’ and linked this to the Elephant as an ‘elephant never forgets!’ We are all looking forward to investigating the many aspects of Geography as the term progresses and incorporating some of our learning in our exciting production presentation of song and dance. Our inquiry unit of Geography will continue into Term 4.
The implementation of Classroom Systems is well and truly on the way as students demonstrate the values of Learning, Respect, Resilience and Teamwork within the different settings of our classroom environment. Students have been receiving their Buzz Classroom Awards, spinning the wheel and enjoying their hard-earned rewards, acknowledging their positive behaviours.
We are looking forward to a fabulous Term 3!
Kind regards,
Ms Kourkoulis and Mrs Andreou
