Victoria's High Ability Program

Tanya Lindsay-Clark

At Mackellar, we aim to increase depth, broaden, extend and improve upon the knowledge and skills of all students, regardless of their starting point.  Teachers are pleased to see the high level of engagement that students are demonstrating in literacy and numeracy groups across the school.

One of our groups is the Victorian High Ability Program.  The Department of Education invites students to participate in the Victorian High Ability Program each term.  Selection is based on their academic performance and high Naplan results from previous years that places them in the top 10% of Victorian students for English.

Weekly online lessons with students from other schools are facilitated by tutors from Virtual School Victoria.  Students are challenged to use critical thinking skills as they analyse complex texts and collaborate with others in the process. During the course ‘Power of the Pen’, they consider a world without writing, examine the history of writing, and have the opportunity to extend their story writing skills.

Congratulations to Katelyn from 5A, and Travon and Lucas from 6A for participating in the program in Term 2.  Term 1 participants; Molly and Siddig from 6C, and Prabhas from 6B  also received their certificates from VHAP at assembly this week.  We would like to congratulate Giorgia from 5A for her commitment to the program this term.
