Education in Faith

17th Sunday in Ordinary Time - Year A

Scriptural context

Over the last few weeks we have heard Matthew explanation in Chapter 13. We heard first the parable of the sower then last week three short parables about weeds amongst the wheat, the mustard seed growing into a great tree and leaven in the flour. Finally, this week we have had these additional sharp parables. The entire chapter seeks to paint metaphoric images of the kingdom of God. Woven through these images is a suggestion that the kingdom is open to all – all are presented with the invitation – but not everyone will accept that invitation or respond to it in the same way.

Discussion Starters

  • In the Gospel what precious things did the people find?
  • What did they do when they found them?
  • Why do you think they sold everything to buy their treasure?
  • Jesus says God’s kingdom is like a treasure that makes you happy.
  • What makes you happy about being part of God’s kingdom?
  • How can we share this happiness with others?

VINNIES SOUP AND CHAT EVENING

On Thursday August 10th, Mini Vinnies will have the opportunity to attend our first Soup and Chat evening. The focus of the evening will be raising awareness about homelessness which is an issue not only within our local community but the wider community also. We have invited the Vinnies Youth Engagement Team to come and present a variety of engaging activities to raise awareness. There will also be a fundraising element to this evening and students will then decide which Vinnies Program they would like to support.

Parents can I now ask you to give permission via Operoo and then students will be given their fundraising sheet.

If parents are able to assist with soup making or serving on the evening it would be greatly appreciated. I have put out an Operoo note for you to fill in. Also if anyone has contacts and could get donations of vegetables, fruit, bread, margarine and disposable cups and spoons that would be greatly appreciated. Once again you can fill in the Operoo form if you can access any of the above for us. I will then be in contact with any parents who are able to assist in any way.
