Hello Aitken Hill Primary!

Lots has happened this term already, including a Pyjama Day for 100 Days of School and Book Week 2023. You may have noticed that the S.T.E.A.M 2 / Art Room between the Ulysses and Achilles Communities has been dressed up to honour Mexican artist Frida Kahlo, using the Little People, Big Dreams book as inspiration.

FOUNDATION COMMUNITY

Students have been learning all about torn paper collage, colours and emotions. They have been working hard on their fine motor skills by tearing tiny pieces of coloured paper and glueing them down. Students designed their own emojis and used the torn paper collage technique to create a face, then drew and cut out accessories and details. Students continue to use a self-evaluation rubric to help identify where they think their level of skill sits and what they can do to improve their technique.

1/2 COMMUNITY

Students have been using images of Australian Landscapes to inspire their recent designs for a mixed media collage including materials such as paper, watercolour paints, cardboard, oil pastels and natural elements like sticks and leaves. The art room is filled with incredible colours at present and we look forward to sharing the finished works.

3/4 COMMUNITY

Students have been introduced to abstract sculptures by Australian artists such as Tony Coleing, Inge King, Clement Meadmore, Lenton Parr and Ron Robertson-Swann. They chose 2 artists to do further research on and have drawn inspiration from them for their own abstract sculpture designs. Students have then begun creating their armature (or skeleton/frame) using recycled materials. So far the shapes emerging are intriguing and innovative.

5/6 COMMUNITY

Students are drawing inspiration from Lesley Anne Greene’s animal sculpture work. They have designed their own abstract animals, have begun building their armature (or skeleton/frame) and are currently adding clay. Students need to consider the Art Elements and Principles (line, colour, shape, texture, form, contrast, pattern, emphasis, balance, movement, unity) to make their sculpture unique and visually striking. The work being created is outstanding and we look forward to sharing the finished products with you.

ART SMOCKS

A reminder to send a labelled art smock (an old shirt or purchased one) with your child to school. We can keep these in the art smock tubs for use with paint and clay to protect uniforms. Thank you to the students and their families who have already done this.

We are always extremely proud of Aitken Hill students' creativity and expression through art work and can't wait to see their finished pieces.

Thank you,

Carly & Chloe
