Year 1

This week for our Science Unit, Dinosaurs and More, the Year 1 students had a great time making their own dinosaurs out of clay. They made amazing and creative pieces including various features of dinosaurs!

Year 2

This has been a busy time for our Year 2 students. In Literacy, they have been exploring narrative writing. Below are a few interesting starts they have cleverly written to capture the reader's interest.

  • Boom! Lightning flashed and thunder crackled around the old stone castle in the heart of the kingdom, jerking it's occupants awake. By Suyin
  • "Aaaah it's bedtime" the magical cat with wings, said to himself. But when he woke up he had a broken wing. By Henry L
  • "He's gorgeous. He's beautiful. He's perfect!" said the two swans. By Ivana
  • "Wow look at this one!" said Frankie. It's a meerkat." "Woo steady there, Zookeeper. Ryan said. That one is scared." By Ralph
  • 'Bip-bip-bip-bip!' I woke up with my heart racing fast, my flippers were going up and down continuously. It was the day of my friend's birthday party. By Bonnie

Also this week the Year 2's have been looking at building their mental and written strategies to solve addition equations. Below are some photos of the students working on their near double dot paintings.

Year 3

Last Friday, our Year 3 classes set off bright and early on an exciting excursion to Healesville Sanctuary, nestled in Victoria's Yarra Valley. The sanctuary promised an incredible day filled with native wildlife, hands-on learning, and cherished memories.

From colourful lorikeets to lounging kangaroos, Healesville Sanctuary showcased Australia's unique wildlife. We were captivated by koalas, learning about their habits and conservation needs. The sanctuary emphasized education. Workshops taught us about endangered species and habitat protection. A highlight of the experience was the Spirits of the Sky show, and although the birds of prey didn't swoop directly over us, we were all still amazed at their majesty and size.

The Healesville Sanctuary trip left a lasting impact, fostering a love for nature and wildlife. We send out a huge thank you to all of the parent volunteers that came along to help. We couldn't have done it without you!

Matildas Semi Final Celebration

Year 5 students were in the Matilda spirit on Wednesday and made hats in green and gold to wear while watching the game.

As noted in our Student Spotlight section, students Eden, Sophie and Abi wrote a great poem that was shared with the school.

Year 6

In Science for Year 6, we have been investigating micro-organisms. If you aren’t sure what they are, a micro-organisms is a tiny living thing that can be found all around us, but is too small to be seen by the naked eye. They live in water, soil, and in the air. Our own bodies are home to millions of these too!

One micro-organism that we looked at was yeast. Did you know that yeast, being a micro-organism, is technically alive?! Being a living microorganism, it has been present in the world for hundreds of millions of years, and we like to use it to make bread, among other things.

This week, we did a science experiment to find out what temperature yeast needs to be to be activated and produce a gas. We were able to infer that the yeast needed to be in a warm environment, from the procedural text for the experiment, to be active and produce a gas. We had four bottles and conducted a fair experiment to see which combinations of water, yeast and sugar would produce the most gas.

The first bottle had just water and yeast, the second had water, yeast and sugar, the third bottle had sugar and water and the fourth bottle had yeast and sugar. After we had followed the instructions and mixed the ingredients together, we made our predictions and then left it for an hour to see what would happen.

When we came back, we observed that the second bottle of every group’s balloon was raised, and that one group's first balloon was also raised. We figured out that to create the gas, which we found out was carbon dioxide, the yeast had to be mixed with warm water. The addition of the sugar fed the yeast and helped it activate, like a little snack.

It was a very interesting experiment and we enjoyed looking at which combinations would produce the best results!

Nick Staikos Visit

Last term we were writing persuasive letters then on the 22nd of July we posted letters to Nick Staikos about problems that need to be fixed in the community. On Friday the 11th of August, Nick Staikos came to Ormond Primary School to talk to us about the letters we sent to him. Some of the things he spoke about were how he is going to be placing machines where you recycle cans and plastic bottles and you will get 10 cents in exchange. He also talked about littering, road accidents, the cleanliness of public toilets and facilities in youth parks. Some of our issues he will discuss with the Mayor. We are very excited that Nick Staikos could come to our school and that we were able to make a change in our community to a healthier and happier place.

S.T.E.A.M Incursion

On Wednesday the year sixes had a steam incursion about computer science.  Our host Dan taught us how the computer binary code works. Did you know the computer's binary code only has numbers 0 and 1?! So if I were to write five, instead of this ‘5’ it would be ‘00000101’. Dan then put us into groups and we had to solve different puzzles and problems. One included a 4 digit code for a sticker, we also played around with some other puzzles and spheros. There was a game where we had to put a computer which was in bits together. Everyone learned something and had lots of fun.

Book Week Parade

This year the Book Week theme is Read, Grow, Inspire. The Book Week Parade will take place on Thursday 24th August at  9:15am.

We would like students to choose a character from a favourite book and then dress up as that character. On the day, we'd like them to bring the book along to share with classmates.  We discourage students from wearing their AFL/Sports kits as there will be an opportunity to celebrate their favourite footy team at a later date. Year 5 and Year 6 students are going to vote on a theme for their costumes in the coming week.

We thank you in advance for your support with costumes.
