From the Head of Senior School

Mrs Sue-Ann Gavin

Our Students are Simply Amazing!

Even though COVID-19 is still very much a part of our current School fabric it is so rewarding to see the joy that so many of our recent scheduled events provide our students – and staff for that matter.

The World’s Greatest Shave has been a long-standing tradition for our Kinross Wolaroi School Year 11 students, a wonderful right of passage that so many of our students have supported.  This year it was made even more special as the students organized, fund raised and actioned the shave independent of staff involvement. We are enormously proud of these generous, caring and selfless individuals who have made an significant contribution to such a worthwhile cause, currently having raised just under $25,000!  Sophie Heath and Grace Adams have raised  over $4000 each.

Whilst it was an amazing team effort, I must make special mention of Dan Hunter. Thank you, Dan, for your leadership, organization and execution of such a wonderful community cause.

The following students were involved in the fund raising:

  • Grace Adams
  • Greta Bourne

Tuesday saw another opportunity for our students to embrace and celebrate the commitment, involvement, and opportunities we value at Kinross Wolaroi School.

The 2022 Athletics Carnival was a wonderful day of friendly competition that allowed our students to shine. As always participation was outstanding.  Whether students were competing to maximise House points or to challenge age old records, they participated in good spirit and comradery.

It is always wonderful to see the celebrations and support that our students give each other when personal bests are bettered, events are won and records are broken.  The highlight of my day came from witnessing this.  I was fortunate to see Laura Chudleigh Yr 7 break a 16 year old record in the U13 Girls High Jump.  As she cleared the bar the cheer and screams from the other girls was beautiful, they collectively ran and formed a cheering circle around her.  The moment was special.  It is these moments that I truly appreciate how lucky I am to teach at Kinross Wolaroi School.

During our Principal’s Assembly’s we are privileged to hear some of our outstanding musicians perform.  This week it was like being transported to the Sydney Opera House or even Carnegie Hall.  Isabel Wong Year 9 played ‘Violin Concerto in A Minor’ superbly. I would imagine that this would be a daunting task to perform in front of the whole Senior School when you are in Year 9, if it was, we certainly could not tell.  This performance was then followed by another Year 9 student Anabelle van Wyk. We have shared Annabelle’s music successes with the School before, she is in fact performing at Carnegie Hall in July. Annabelle played ‘Concertino for Alto Saxophone’ and had the entire audience enthralled. Both Isabel’s and Annabelle’s performances showed such maturity, we are certainly lucky to have such a wonderful music program that supports and fosters such talent but more importantly we are lucky that these students are willing to share their incredible talents with us.
