Sport & Co-curricular Wrap Up

Mr Joe Priest, Director of Sport and Co‑curricular

Kinross Wolaroi had a variety of activities occurring over the last fortnight. The campus has been a busy place with the Camerata competition, virtual debating, cattle team at the Blayney show, ISA touch football trials, WAS hockey trials and an athletics carnival just to name a few of the events that have taken place. It is always impressive to see the vast range of talents our students possess outside of the classroom. Last weeks assembly was testament to the outstanding talents of our students with over 100 sporting awards given to students for their achievements this term.

Congratulations must also be extended to the last of the co-curricular captains to be appointed. Lazo Jalal and Bianca Fuller were named as swimming captains and Stephanie Wong was named as our first debating captain. I am sure they will represent our school proudly this year.

In sport this week we have progressed through to finals in most of our sports. KWS 1st cricket had a solid win to put them through to the 2nd grade grand final to be played at Wade Park this weekend. This is a fantastic achievement that tops off a great season for our 1st cricketers. The ISA tennis team had their doubles championships this weekend with KWS winning the doubles this year in a slightly revised format. Junior touch teams and basketball teams have also played finals this week. Good luck to all sporting teams over the next couple of weeks.

ISA Tennis - Doubles Championship

Last weekend we competed in the ISA Tennis Doubles Championship against Scots All Saints College and St Stanislaus' College. There were four representative teams from Kinross Wolaroi who included Ollie Wong and Ollie Churcher, Tim Dakin and Max Reidy, , and Guy and Ciara Ross. Our teams played in two separate pools to compete for the Doubles Championship title. Ciara and Guy had some tough matches in their pool and unfortunately didn’t progress through to the finals. Emma and Ollie came 2nd in their pool and progressed through to the consolation final, where they lost in a competitive match.

Both Ollie W and Ollie C, and Tim and Max won their pools and progressed through to create a KWS Championship final. Both pairs played consistently and showed great team spirit and sportsmanship. Ollie W and Ollie C won the final in a nail-biting tie breaker with a score of 9-7. Both teams should be congratulated on an outstanding final and a special mention should go to the team members who came to support their fellow players. We look forward to the KWS Singles Championships which will take place this Saturday.

ISA TOUCH FOOTBALL TRIALS

On Friday 18 March, fourteen of our talented touch football girls participated at the ISA Representative trials at Barker College in Sydney. We had seven junior girls trial for the under 15’s. Katie Ivey, Poppy Nuthall, Lilly Clarke, Lucy Robb, Maddy O’Brein, Claudia Mason and Liv Martin. Additionally, we had Josie Clarke, Charlotte Ivey, Heidi Ferguson, Chanel Knight, Claudia Francis, Anita Lewis and Airlie Mason who trialled for the U’18s team. We had great success, as overall ten of our students across both teams were selected. These two teams will now represent ISA at the NSWCIS championships at Penrith on  29 April. All students should be commended on their sportsmanship and attitude. The School community should be very proud.

Rugby 7s

On Friday 11 March Kinross Wolaroi School played in their inaugural game of girls’ rugby sevens, with a group of enthusiastic students thrilled to finally be able to be part of one of the school’s great traditions.

The introduction of girls’ rugby to the school has been highly anticipated since 2021 when head of rugby, Matt Tink first mooted the idea. Matt’s extensive experience coaching women’s rugby at international level will bring big benefits for the Kinross Wolaroi Team, according to Principal, Dr Andrew Parry.

“Our community is excited about this fabulous opportunity for our girls to be involved in this international sport,” he said.

“From seeing our girls play touch football in recent weeks I wouldn’t be at all surprised for us to have some future rugby sevens Olympians emerge from the squad.”

Many of the girls have been inspired by Kinross Wolaroi’s Grace Hamilton, who is currently captain of the Australian Women’s national rugby union team

.

Women’s rugby has been on an incredible journey to earn its place in the spotlight and now has 180,000 registered players across the nation.

In NSW, female club rugby participation has grown from 5% of total club players to close to 13% in 3 years.

On Friday the team played in a round robin that attracted six schools including Kinross Wolaroi, Orange Anglican Grammar, James Sheahan, MacKillop Bathurst, Scots All Saints and Forbes Redbend.

The Jakiya Whitfeld Cup is an initiative of Central West Rugby.

Rugby Report

After a few false starts, our  Girls Rugby program has finally kicked off. We have girls participating in the U14s, U16s & U18s divisions of the Jakiya Whitfeld Cup. This is an exciting time for our Rugby program and we are hoping to make  Rugby a permanent fixture.

All games have been held at School over the last two Friday afternoons and it was exceptionally pleasing to see such a large crowd supporting our girls. All fixtures have been trial games where the focus has been on learning the game and having fun. This Friday afternoon we begin our competition phase before the Grand Finals on Friday 1 April.

It was very pleasing last Friday to have Australian 7s player Jakiya Whitfeld attend and pass on her knowledge to our girls.

Training for our 16s and Open boys teams begin this week. Any boy who wishes to be considered for selection in the 1st XV or 16A’s is invited to attend training this Thursday after school at the Ex-Students fields. Training will continue on Tuesday and Thursday of Week 9.

Training for any boy who wishes to be considered for selection in the U13As, U14As and U15As are invited to attend training on Tuesday and Thursday of Week 9.

Please note, any boy who wishes to be considered for selection in an A team, but who is unable to attend training must email mtink@kws.nsw.edu.au and let me know.

KWS 14 Royals vs Orange City

The Royals played some excellent cricket to record their first win of the 2021-22 season on Saturday.

Upon winning the toss, Royals captain Jono Gee elected to bat. After the loss of early wickets the Royals batting recovered some equilibrium thanks to a 10 over partnership between Jono Gee and Henry McCardell. Henry was then joined by Sam Hughes and continued to battle hard against some good bowling. When Henry and then Ben Larkings were dismissed in the 24th over the scoreboard read 7 for 44 and it was clear that the Royals needed something special to post a competitive score. That innings was supplied by Sam Hughes who played the pull shot to very good effect in the closing overs to hit vital boundaries that enabled the score to get to 66. He was ably supported by Ryan Everett and then Harry Chase who played out some good deliveries and ran hard between the wickets.

Defending such a low score was going to be a test for the Royals but they put the experience of the past weeks to good use and passed with flying colours. Henry McCardell bowled extremely well to take 3 for 3 from 5 overs and his opening partner Will Denovan also did a very good job to take 1for 8 from his 5 overs. Their fellow seamer Josh Brett was equally impressive and recorded the same 1 for 8 from 5 overs. Charlie Keirle was his usual economical and threatening self and took 2 for 10 from 4 overs.

Despite this the finish was still very tight. The last over arrived and Orange City needed 8 to win with three wickets to spare. The captain Jono Gee had several bowling options left but decided to take matters into his own hands and bowl the last over himself. This was a brave decision. He had not bowled up to this point but it proved to be an inspired choice. City could only manage 3 runs (losing a wicket along the way) and the Royals recorded a famous win.

Well done to the Royals for finally getting that long sought after victory. It was a tough season but the Royals deserve a lot of credit for the way they applied themselves to improving their cricket and for the manner in which they played the game.

Thanks go to Charlie Condon for his help with coaching and scoring throughout the season. This was  much appreciated.

Thanks also to all the Royals parents for their help with umpiring and scoring and encouragement of players and coaches alike.

KWS Heat v OC Warriors – Semi Final

The KWS Heat had a fantastic 6-wicket win against the OC Warriors to book a spot in the U15 Grand Final. Winning the toss, captain Jack Harding chose to bowl on a damp KWS Main pitch and dewy outfield. This immediately back-fired. The OC openers were sensational, playing with confidence and running between wickets well to post one of the best scores at drinks on Main for a junior side all season at 0/68 after 15 overs. KWS bowled satisfactorily but did drop three tough chances early. Tomma Tancred (0/19 off 5) kept things tight so the score did not get away. A change of attitude and bowlers after drinks turned things around. Ashton Nock (2/23) and Robbie Heath (3/17) removed the openers and put the brakes on the OC innings. Good death bowling from Archie Condon (0/10) and opening bowlers Harvey Shephard and Jack Harding kept the damage to 5/133. Still a solid score on Main.

Charlie Miller (50no off 47) opened with Heath, and while Heath couldn’t trouble the scores like he did with the ball, Miller set the tone for the KWS innings with more sixers than fours. He was ably supported by Harding (10) and Nock (18). Nock in particular anchored the KWS innings to allow the big hitters to take control of the chase. After Charlie’s match winnings innings came to an end with a forced retirement, Shephard came out in a hurry and blasted 23 off 20 to put the result beyond doubt, with Nock and Tancred finishing the game off with more than 3 overs to spare.

This was one of the best run chases from a junior team in recent years on Main, and to do it in the semi final is super impressive. KWS will now take on Cavaliers in the Grand Final.

Thank you to Mrs Cooey Mutton and Mr Dan Millar for helping score.

Semi-Final vs Orange City

Kinross were sent into bat in their semi-final clash by last year’s premiers Orange City on a good pitch at Jack Brabham after two successive batting collapses, most recently against Orange City only a week prior. KWS’ openers Walter Prowse (78) and James Glasson (9) put fears of an early collapse to bed guiding Kinross to 0/39 at the first drinks break. Prowse combined with number 3 batter Charlie Tink (19) to take the score to 1/87 at the 30th over. With wickets in hand KWS looked to up the ante in the final 15 overs. Luke Hunter (30 from 22 deliveries) combined with Prowse adding 50 in just 7 overs to take the score to 3/142 in 38.3 overs. Prowse was finally dismissed in the 40th over, a remarkable effort considering the heat of the afternoon and the large boundaries requiring a lot of running with many balls pulling up short of the boundary despite. This dismissal triggered a collapse from Kinross, albeit whilst maintaining the fast-scoring rate eventually bowled out with 7 balls remaining for 185 thanks to quick runs from Will Waterson (9 from 10), David Hunter (13 from 8) and Dylan Tucker (7 from 5).

In reply, Hugh Thompson (4/17 from 5.3), opening the bowling for the first time all season was magnificent claiming 2 early wickets thanks to a skewed drive to mid-off and then from a beautiful inswinger, tailing in late, through the gate, surely going on to hit the middle of middle stump. Not to be outdone, Prowse (1/13 from 6) claimed a wicket of his own, taken by Waterson at Mid-Wicket with credit going to excellent fielding from Dylan Tucker at point, saving around a dozen well struck cut shots from costing any runs and economical bowling from Henry Forsyth . Spin was introduced from both ends with Jono Rasmussen (3/10 from 9 overs) taking the 4th wicket, catching a big deviation from the outside edge, with ‘keeper James Glasson holding on to an excellent catch. This left city at 4/41 at the first drinks break. Dudley Shepherd (2/23 from 7) struck after the drinks break with a beautiful off-spinner pitching outside off, spinning in through the gate, crashing into the top of middle stump. The pair were magnificent, operating in tandem in the middle session going for under 2 runs per over in the session, with Rasmussen claiming another wicket as the pressure mounted forcing a bad shot. Shepherd Struck again, bowling a leg-spinner for variation, which pitched on middle and leg, drawing the batter forward before spinning past the outside edge, clipping the top of off stump. Rasmussen picked up his third with a faster yorker going under the bat, smashing the stumps. After the Drinks break Thompson was re-introduced, claiming another wicket caught at mid-off before bowling a Jaffa which seamed away slightly to clip the top of off stump. In total Orange city were bowled out for 80 across 32.3 overs. This means we will play in the Grand Final At Wade Park on 26 March.

Triathlon

On Sunday 20 March the Triathlon Team competed at the Orange Cycle and Triathlon Club Championships at Gosling Creek. On a beautiful Autumn morning our students competed in the final OCTC Triathlon of the season. In the Super Sprint (200m swim, 6.6km ride, 2.2km run) Will Ward came home in 2nd place overall, Abi Jones was 3rd overall (1st female), Felicity Knox 5th and Claire Ward-Finn 6th. (1st place was taken out by our very own Mr Simon Lun – Industrial Technology HOD).

In the Sprint distance race (400m swim, 14.4km ride, 3.6km run) Tom Cornelius-Feltus finished first overall and was awarded the Male OCTC Championship trophy for 2022. In 4th place Spencer Johnston (3rd under 19) had a terrific race. Luca Telfer 9th, George Hogg 13th, 14th Ollie Krause, 15th Poppy Nuthall, 17th Isobella Montagliani, 18th Charlotte England, 19th Jess Thompson.

Starting a Triathlon race is a significant commitment, finishing is a great achievement. The KWS Triathlon coaches are very proud of the fitness, skills, team spirit and development that all of the athletes have displayed this season.
