STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT

Caterina de Maria's project is one of finalist projects for the BHP awards. What an achievement! Congratulations to John McGlashan for his guidance and providing opportunity to our students to participate in the Science Talent Search.

Congratulations! It gives me great pleasure to inform you that you have been selected as a Finalist for Secondary Investigations in the December 2021 BHP Foundation Science and Engineering Awards with your project titled “The effect of Eucalyptus camaldulensis  smoke on photosynthesis”. A total of 25 student finalists have been selected from across Australia....

You are invited to attend the BHP Foundation Science and Engineering Virtual Awards Ceremony. The Awards Ceremony as part of your participation, you will be virtually connected to a small group of finalist students, other teachers, program alumni, BHP representatives and CSIRO staff to network and hear from a range of guest speakers, including short presentations from BHP, CSIRO and ASTA representatives.

We have had a tradition of winning major bursaries with distinctions, but this is very special and a Biology project.

2021 VETDSS AWARDS

II would like to recap the year by sincerely thanking all teaching staff who allowed Careers Practitioner Fiona Dimasi and I to speak to their classes about where a VET course can take you and how a School Based Apprenticeship (SBAT) can change the life of a young person pursuing a trade.

As I sit on the Sunraysia Careers Network, I was involved in staging a ‘virtual’ Excellence in VET Awards on November 17. Last year, due to Covid restrictions, the Awards were cancelled, but because of the renewed interest in VET in 2021, the decision was made to do a pre-recorded ‘virtual’ event which was streamed.

St Joseph’s College took out six awards as follows:

  • SBAT of the Year (year 1) – Ryley Whitelegg
  • VET Fitness – Maya Scott
  • VCAL Foundation – Lucy Cirillo
  • VET Plumbing – Matthew Madio
  • VET Rural Operations – Nunzio Tabacco
  • VCAL Senior – Rory Hooper

The photoshoot of winners with sponsors was conducted on Tuesday November 23 at Rio Vista House. The winners were presented with their trophy, their cash prize and their certificate. It was a very good result for our college, and an excellent example of where VET can take you.
