We thank them for the work they have done in providing a safe and engaging learning environment for our students, particularly over the last two years of remote learning.

‘Shine a Light On'

‘Shine a Light On' provides our College community a snapshot into the professional lives of our teachers and what makes them ‘tick’ on a daily basis. Whilst we know that our staff do an amazing job, it is not as often that we publicly acknowledge the work that they do and the many wonderful ways that they contribute to the learning journeys of our students.

This week at the College we are profiling Ms Laura Lunardi. Laura is a teacher within the Humanities Learning Area and our Careers Coordinator.

What originally inspired you to become a teacher and what motivates you now?

My love of learning fostered when my parents made the decision to send me to Kilbreda College to embrace the Catholic tradition via the core values and beliefs of Brigidine Education. During my secondary school years, the Brigidine Sisters empowered young women to learn together, and to be people of wisdom and compassion, instilling the Brigidine motto of Strength and Kindliness. I have been most privileged to be taught by passionate and dynamic educators both at Kilbreda and at University, inspiring me to become the teacher I am today.

Initially, I studied the Bachelor of Education in Commerce at The University of Melbourne and then continued studying throughout my teaching career in the areas of Religious Education, Applied Learning, Vocational Educational and Training (VET) and Career Development. Being a teacher gives me a strong sense of purpose and fulfilment in my life, especially becoming as knowledgeable as I can be about my content area, always striving to fuel my passion of learning to all my students.

What motivates me now is to just put my true self into my teaching, giving everything I can in supporting each student’s individual learning goals and uncovering the hidden treasures and possibilities of each student. I have experienced that the students connect to the person that is teaching, not simply the content being taught.

What is the most rewarding part of teaching subjects within the Humanities Learning Area at Kilbreda College?

Teaching subjects such as Legal Studies, Accounting, Business Management and Humanities at Years 7 to 10, has been most rewarding for me when I see students apply their knowledge learnt in class to contemporary society. I believe these subjects aim to build the skills for lifelong learning and to encourage resilient and creative thinkers.

I have had the opportunity to explore various teaching practices throughout my teaching career. The introduction of innovative technology in the classroom has been spellbinding, especially using the internet and YouTube to enhance my students’ learning of business principles with the world they live in.

Teaching is one of the most rewarding professions in that it gives you an opportunity to make an impact on a future generation.
