Wellbeing

Ms Kate Cutcliffe, Acting Head of Student Wellbeing

Upcoming Wellbeing Day: Monday 29 November

The Kinross Wolaroi Wellbeing Day is designed as a celebration that brings together the social and emotional learning competencies that Mentors have been teaching throughout the term.

Term 4 in Wellbeing has culminated with a focus on the tenet of ‘empathy’. Empathy is a commonly used term but can at times be discussed in a shallow fashion. It is much more than sympathy, compassion or giving, and requires genuine effort and action. It is an essential life skill that dictates the effectiveness and functionality of all other social skills that humans acquire and develop. As such, our Wellbeing Day for Term 4 is packed with experiences that will help to challenge and further develop students’ skills in developing lasting bonds, whilst treating themselves and each other with kindness and equality.

The following activities will take place for students in Years 7-11;

Year 7 will be hearing from Senior Constable Jane Heffernan, the Central West School Liaison Police Officer, who will be explaining what risk-taking behaviour looks like in the eyes of the law. This will be followed by a film creating session on the journey of empathy throughout Year 7.

Year 8 will be hearing from our Psychologists who have arranged some engaging activities about stereotypes and the impacts these have on our wellbeing. This will be followed by a team building activity called the ‘Amazing Race’ which has been designed by Head Mentors Michelle Thompson and Bryan Thomas.

Year 9 will have the pleasure of engaging in workshops from Enlighten Education. Enlighten Education is co-founded by Dannielle Miller who designs programs for teenage boys and girls to help them develop self-esteem and confidence. The workshop for Year 9 girls will recognise the diverse interests of girls and present them with content that is non-commercial, age appropriate and (most importantly) empowering. The Year 9 girls will also look at concepts such as ‘forever friends’, ‘gratitude’ and ‘loving the skin you’re in’. The workshop for Year 9 boys is called the ‘Myth Busters’ workshop. The aim of this workshop is to "debunk" the most common, and damaging myths about boys in an engaging, funny, positive way to build skills that allow boys to move beyond stereotypes. The essence of the workshop is to address, gender, relationships, technology and learning in a friendly environment.

Year 10 will be hearing from Brent Sanders. Brent Sanders is a NZ-born, Sydney-based former police officer. While in the police force, he was deployed in riot control, and he also did extensive work investigating sexual assault and studying the methods and psychology of sexual assault offenders. Brent will be running workshops that are designed to teach our students how to deal effectively with all aspects of sexual harassment, discrimination and date rape.

Year 11 will have the opportunity to engage in mini workshops that focus on Health Study, Nutrition & Movement Habits for the HSC and beyond. These sessions will be run by our KWS education experts and Year Coordinators.

The Wellbeing Day Workshops will culminate in a Year Group BBQ Picnic where students will be engaging in games and activities on the ovals.

We are very much looking forward to the upcoming Wellbeing Day. Students are encouraged to attend the day with an open mind and make the most of the opportunities given to them throughout this day. If you have any questions about any of the above workshops, please reach out and we will be happy to answer any questions.
