Water Polo News

Water Polo has been busy and fun and different this term.

Due to ongoing issues with the Orange Aquatic centre, we have adapted to constrained circumstances and still managing plenty of fun, fitness, camaraderie and competition. We are still training in age divisions that reflect the Orange competition, so that when it starts up again in 2022, we will be ready and competitive.

The 1sts and 2nds squads are training twice a week as well as many players taking advantage of twice weekly swim sessions programmed by Mr Taylor the Swimming coach. He is kindly creating customised training regimes for our players that target the skills and muscle sets needed for strong Water Polo. We are very grateful for his work and it is really making a difference to the players’ strength and stamina.

The Year 7 students are meeting most weeks for a theory and dry-land training session. So far we have targeted knowledge and skills around: Rules, positions and defensive skills. Mr Smedley has drawn on his knowledge and skills from his other teaching area of expertise, PDHPE and devises fun activities to help put the theory into practice.

The Intermediate players have shown great patience and understanding about the fact that their training sessions have to happen on weekends. This is not normally the case so we are very grateful to those players who committed to Water Polo thinking they would have their weekends free but have nevertheless turned up consistently to Saturday training sessions. Thank you, too, to their parents who are ensuring that they get to and from training safely.

We are running an internal competition this term to put our skills into practice. This is the way we used to have Water Polo at school before the Orange Competition was established. The atmosphere is fabulous, with games running back-to-back and plenty of players volunteering to sub for other teams, help with scoring and time-keeping and also refereeing. This spirit of ‘pitching-in’ is essential to successfully sustaining community sport so I am confident that by promoting this atmosphere, we are nurturing important values and attitudes in our players.

The students are to be commended for the spirit with which they play – a good balance of fun and competition. Friday evening Water Polo is a great way to end the school week and start the weekend in an energised and happy way. When restrictions ease, I would strongly encourage parents to come along and share the fun and excitement of this great game.

Cricket Report

The rain continues to play havoc with the cricket season but thankfully Orange’s plethora of synthetic pitches has maintained most Saturday fixtures. There have been several students away with harvest leave and KWSCC wish them and their families the best for the remainder of the harvest. Thank you to all students and fathers that have stepped up into both the 2nd XI and Centenary Cup XIs to take their place.

With holidays fast approaching the Club needs an indication of who may be available for holiday fixtures – both students and parents. The ODJCA December 11 fixtures for the U16s and U14s will be played at training either this term or next to accommodate boarders. The first game back for ODJCA games is January 29. The First and Second XI fixtures are not as flexible so please fill out the survey indicating when you or your child may be able to play.

Reports:

1st XI vs Orange City

Kinross Wolaroi put last game’s disappointing loss vs Cavaliers behind them to take on the reigning 2nd Grade premiers Orange City. Kinross won their third straight toss and sent City into bat on a green deck in overcast conditions. The ever-reliable Walter Prowse (2/19) made the opening breakthrough, thanks to a sharp catch in first slip from David Hunter. Henry Forsyth (1/13) continued his strong form this season taking the second wicket. Walter Prowse then claimed his second to have City struggling at 3/36. City added 38 for their 4th wicket, however, dot ball pressure from the ever consistent Harry Priest (0/20) allowed Dudley Shepherd (3/18) to combine with a tough catch from Prowse to claim the breakthrough. Very next ball Shepherd removed City’s other set batter, once again due to a well taken catch from David Hunter in first slip. He bowled a dot-on the hat trick ball to finish the over. Arnie Tancred (4/15) was brought back into the attack and claimed immediate rewards, with Prowse taking another sharp catch, this time in gully. This damage totaled with a batting collapse of 3/0 in 4 balls. After this collapse, City looked set to recover, before Shepherd struck again for his third to have city at 7/86. Tancred was then able to clean up the tail, taking the last three wickets with City bowled out for 96.

Kinross Wolaroi began their innings strongly taking 11 off the first 2 overs thanks to openers Hugh Thompson (7) and Luke Hunter (6). Dudley Shepherd (14) came in at 3 and once again scored freely, piercing the field on either side of point and then gully in the same over. However, good bowling and some poor shot selection had Kinross at 4/34. Jono Rasmussen (17), ever entertaining, added fresh life to the Kinross Innings scoring two 4s and a 6, clearing the mid-wicket boundary at Jack Brabham with relative ease, before he was dismissed thanks to a spectacular outfield catch. Walter Prowse (21*), once again anchored the innings and provided the perfect foil for Rasmussen as they added 26 for the 5th wicket. Sam Gee (9) and David Hunter (8*) combined with Prowse to finish the chase.

We bowled and fielded especially well to bowl Orange City out for 96. With 9 out of the 10 wickets out caught, highlighting the benefits of an increased emphasis on fielding practise. David Hunter took 3, Walter Prowse and Luke Hunter each took 2, and Harry Priest and Dylan Tucker took one apiece in tough fielding conditions, with a wet ball and overcast skies. With the bat, the KWS batters still need to work on batting time and building their innings.

2nd XI vs Gladstone

After losing the toss, we were put up to bowl first. The wet conditions made it difficulty, but the team played well, bowling Gladstone out in 28 overs for 188 runs. Conditions were remarkably better in the second innings and despite some great partnerships and our highest total this season (6/135), we didn’t manage to chase the runs.

Some standout performances:

Harrison Sharpe- 3/30

Rowan Wilson- 38 runs and 2/4

Angus Pengilly- 29 runs

Jock Litchfield- 21 runs

Blake Dwyer- 15 runs

U15 Heat v OC Warriors

KWS Heat maintained their unbeaten run by claiming a nervy 13 run victory.

KWS Heat won the toss and chose to bat, having the first opportunity of the season to set a total. Robbie Heath (31) started with intent and despite being dropped twice he kept the score ticking over as his mainstay partner Jack Harding (39no) settled the innings. George Tancred (26) hurried the scoring later in the innings but pushed is running between the wickets too far going for a second. The Heat were benefited by a fourth major contributor, Orange City’s extras total of 27, concluding the 30 overs at 6/134.

In reply, OC were in a spot of bother early with Tomma Tancred (1/5) and Harvey Shephard (2/15) removing the top order. OC had to rebuild and they did slowly until just after drinks when Tom Balcomb (2/15) landed two good balls and rattled their middle-order. OC were not done with though and some panicked fielding from KWS kept OC in the game without being ever too close. Needing more than 10 an over for the last three overs, Ryan Weston, Heath and Ashton Nock kept things tight enough to see the Heat over the line.

Thank you to Mr Miller for scoring.

U14 KWS Royals vs CYMS Green

The Royals were defeated by CYMS Green on Saturday.

After being put into bat the Royals managed to bat their 30 overs (just) but only managed to score 70 runs. This was a little disappointing considering that the new ball was seen off and there were some good partnerships developing between Charlie Keirle and Henry McCardell and Charlie Keirle and Jonathan Gee. Ben Larkings also played with intent before being dismissed and Sam Hughes did everything he could to add runs in the closing overs. However, CYMS deserve credit for bowling consistently and keeping the pressure on in the field. This is what enabled them to take wickets at regular intervals and prevent the Royals from scoring more runs.

CYMS reached their target with the best part of 10 overs to spare. There was some good bowling from Lachie Gordon and Jonathan Gee to begin with and Will Denovan and Charlie Keirle later on. However, the Royals needed to do more to support their bowlers and create pressure in the field – especially when we were defending such a small total.

Thanks to Mrs Gee and newly deputised KWS 14’s Coach Charlie Condon for assistance with scoring and general support on the day.

Next week sees the Royals taking on Cavaliers at Max Stewart Oval and we will be looking at putting in a better all-round performance.
