Student & School Community Achievements

International Womens Day

Message from the Principal

Term 1 has been a busy, but fulfilling one and I have enjoyed coming full circle in completing a year at the school. The school continues to grow with approximately 800 students enrolled and our students are enjoying the opportunities afforded by the return to most activities as COVID restrictions have relaxed. This term alone, students have participated and excelled in sporting events, creative arts performances and academically.

The term began with an analysis of HSC results. The school performed above state average in Biology, Business Services (VET), Chinese Continuers, Chinese in Context, Chinese and Literature, English Standard, English Advanced, English EAL/D, English Extension 2, Hospitality (VET), Legal Studies, Mathematics Standard 1, Mathematics Advanced, Modern History, Music 1 and Visual Arts. Strong results were maintained in all subjects with average examination marks ranging from 68% to 88% for all HSC courses.

Student voice and leadership has also been in focus with our four leadership groups organising and participating in events that show a community spirit and concern for social justice. Our Indigenous Leadership Group is in the early phases of planning a new space for the school; our SRC are running a fundraiser to support the application for a partnership with Share the Dignity; our Prefects have co ordinated student learning activities and celebratory events for Harmony Day; and our Student Environmental Ambassadors are organising a new recycling initiative related to waste in the textiles and clothing industry. Students will be encouraged to bring an unwanted clothing item (still in good condition) to school to swap or donate, thus reducing the amount of clothing materials and microplastics finding their way into our rubbish dumps. This is a great initiative, building on the work they have been doing to encourage us all to be water wise.

Our P&C will also be hosting their second-hand uniform sale on Wednesday 21 April from 7-8.30am. Proceeds from items sold will assist the school to purchase much needed STEM equipment. Please support the sale by donating items you no longer need or by coming along to buy an item.

We are in the final phase of our school planning and are seeking feedback from parents. I have emailed a survey link and thank the 120 parents who have responded. If you have not responded and would like to leave feedback, please click on the link: https://forms.gle/YxDaih4kpGynyePM6

In Term 2 we look forward to launching a new website for the school. This will have an easy to use calendar function with regular news updates. Links to photo galleries, newsletters, permission notes and assessment information should also be easy to find. During winter, we are also embarking on an ambitious goal for the Premier's Sporting Challenge with students across the junior school and staff participating in the 10 week challenge- we hope to have the most students involved ever.

I wish everyone a safe and happy school holiday break and look forward to welcoming students back on Tuesday 20 April.

International Women's Day 2021

March 8 marks the day we acknowledge the achievements and contributions of women in our society and it was a big year for CGHS. Not only did students and staff feature on the Inner West Council honour roll, a series of digital projections across the council area, we also celebrated the day with a large donation drive and lunch time performances. Prefects and SRC raised funds and collected toiletries to donate to the Lillian Howell Project. We also congratulate School Co-Captain Mieke van Wel for her articulate and passionate speech about women's rights delivered as part of the Zonta Sydney West Club broadcast.

Harmony Day

In Term 1, CGHS celebrated Harmony Day through a gold coin donation to the Indigenous Literacy Fund, a hand painted mural and a staff vs students volleyball game. The wet weather on the day did not stop everyone from enjoying the game together, with a number of students watching the game take place at lunch.

The SRC organised a "Harmony " Banner as part of the day's celebration. This activity brought a diverse group of students together to make their personal mark on Hamony Day 2021. The completed banner will be displayed next term.

A thank you to the staff and leadership groups for organising the events on this day.
