Update: Public Speaking and debating

After a big year in the Ivanhoe region of the Debaters Association of Victoria (DAV) competition, three of our teams made it through to the play-offs for the State Finals. D Grade 1 (Zara Baglioni, India Madder Romy Nolan, Mila Lawrence) debated well but were knocked out during the play-offs. Our Year 11 team (Noah Sutherland, Edie Bush, Ella Baker, Tilly Brown) made it through play-offs to the Octo-finals but got knocked out in another close debate. Finally our Year 8 team (Matthew Foster, Joel Taylor and Amelie Sibillin) got through to the quarter finals.  As there are more than 500 D Grade teams in the state to reach the last eight is a fantastic achievement. Former student and quarter finalist Luisa Romeo has been giving extra help to the teams who have made finals.

In other news, Mariah Milla, Edie Bush and Ella Baker will represent Northcote High School at the State Constitutional Convention. The topic for this year is ‘Does the constitution meet the needs of modern Australia’. Earlier in the year Rowan Stewart Smith and Julia Thiem represented Northcote High School earlier in the year at the National Constitutional Convention in Canberra.

Finally the Year 6 Public Speaking competition will be held on Thursday October 18th. The topic will be ‘Hitting the Bullseye’ and the participating schools will be; Alphington Primary, Bell Primary, Carlton North Primary, Fairfield Primary, Fitzroy North Primary, Northcote Primary
