Classroom News

So good to be back!!!

Year 2/3/4 News

Our Inquiry Unit ‘From Farm to Table’ is a Research Project about where our food comes from and the process it takes to get from the farm to our table.

Some of the wonderings the students have made so far are:

How do chickens lay eggs?

What do farmers do after they milk?

How do cows make milk? How much milk per day?

How does rolling in the mud cool pigs down?

Unfortunately our excursion was postponed due to the recent Victorian Lockdown, we are hoping it can be rescheduled ASAP and will let you know the new date as soon as we can.

Year 5 / 6 News

PL3 (Pre Lockdown Three) the students were up to their armpits in learning, enjoying being back with each other and the dynamism of the classroom, the great learning environment. Students were asked to contribute to the debate bubbling away in Australian society...'Should the date of Australia Day be Changed?' The students were shown clips and talked about both sides of the argument, and then to write their response. Here are a couple of pieces.

Should The Date Of Australia

Day Be Changed?

By Lily Dobinson

The 26th of January, 1788 was the day Captain Arthur Phillip arrived on the shores of Australia with the First Fleet. He and eleven ships, filled with convicts from England, arrived in Sydney Cove, bringing multiple illnesses and diseases. The English took over the land of Australia, ignoring the people who already inhabited the land. Who are these people? Well there were over 500 different groups filled with Indigenous Australians who had been living in Australia for over 60,000 years. The English killed and enslaved these residents, but some of the Aboriginals died from the many diseases the English brought with them. This was a tragic time for Indigenous Australians.

But to this day the 26th of January is not remembered like this, it is known as Australia Day, a day where we celebrate Australia and its nation. And some people believe just because Australia day was made on a day where Captain Arthur Phillip proclaimed the land that should not affect this important day just because of its date. Australia Day has been a celebration and tradition for many years and that changing this historic date would be out of the question.

But there's always another side to a story. 26th of January is a day that brought misery and despair to all aboriginals. Australia Day should be celebrated as a nation, as one. And it's unfair for all aboriginals to have to celebrate such an amazing day on such a devastating date. Therefore many people don’t actually call it Australia Day, they call it ‘invasion day’.  And for many years there have been protests about changing the date of Australia day to a happier more joyful date for all.

In my opinion, I truly believe that the date of Australia day should be changed, because it is unfair to celebrate Australia Day on a day where we are meant to be a nation. In reality this was the day that Captain Arthur Phillip came to Australia and invaded the country and that should not be celebrated. Australia Day should be a day where we can come together as one and celebrate, in unity.

Australia Day,

Should the date of Australia day change?

By Oscar Azzarone

I strongly believe that the date of Australia day should not change because on the 26th of January Captain Arthur Phillip came to Australia with the first fleet. There were 11 ships and all of them had convicts on them because  England's jails were too full, so they couldn't fit them all in. So they came to Australia to keep them there.

The reasons why we should keep the same date is because it's a tradition for Australians and it is very important for some. Back in 1935 the Australians recognised that the day that the first fleet arrived in Australia was a date that we should name the iconic date named Australia day. For this reason, it is extremely important that we keep the date the same.

The reasons why we should change the date are because on that date Captain Arthur Phillip came and just took the land. Now the Aboriginals want to change the date for equal rights and so they can celebrate with us, but they haven't changed the date yet so the Aboriginals march for it to change,  but until the date changes the Aboriginals call it invasion day. This reason is very important because it is really important for the aboriginals.

My opinion is the date should not change because that's when the first fleet arrived and that's the day they came and we should keep it the same because it's a tradition.
