Principal's message

The role of school councils has never been more important than it has been over the past year whilst schools adjusted their learning environment to the COVID-19 pandemic.  I give my thanks to all the members of the 2020 School Council for their considered investment in the decision making process and their support for the college during this time. In particular, I thank our retiring School Council members, James Malliaros (who has been a member of School Council for eight years) as well as Andrea Webster and Phil Pearson who joined School Council in 2019. The last two years the Council have supported and allocated funding to the Oval upgrade and to the STEAM Connect Centre.

Following the calling for nominations for the staff, student and parent category members, I welcome our new 2021 School Council Members Carol Duggan (Employee Member Category) and Allison Mugridge and Jo Beecroft (Parent Member Category). I welcome back Mia Evans (re-elected Student Member Category) and Rachael Angus (re-elected Parent Member Category). The number of nominations was equal to the number of vacant positions and, therefore, there was no need to hold an election. I also welcome back Dr Helen Forgasz, Emeritis Professor Faculty of Education, Monash University (Community Member Category). They join Bernadette Gooda, Rosa Ferrari, Simon Johnson, Geri Sumpter, Wendy Harvey and Amberley Powell on the 2021 MGSC School Council.

For 2021 the office bearer positions are:

President – Rachael Angus

Vice President – Geri Sumpter

Treasurer – Rosa Ferrari

The International Women’s Day Assembly was held on Tuesday 9 March with a past School Captain, Shanon McKenzie, addressing our students. Nisha Makam and Lily West, our College Co-Captains and Mia Evans, our SRC Leader, were also awarded their leadership badges along with 145 Student Leaders across the various year levels.  Our Director of Student Leadership, Wendy Harvey, has developed an excellent leadership program for the school in the areas of SRC, Sustainability & Environment, STEAM, Performing Arts, Student Voice & Agency, House Captains and Aerobics Captains, Middle School Leaders, Junior School Leaders and Peer Support Leaders.

The Parents and Friends Committee held their AGM on Tuesday 2 March and had an excellent turnout of old and new parents join us on the evening. It is such a terrific way to come together to meet other parents as well as supporting school events throughout the year. There have been a number of college tours which have seen over 200 plus visitors to the College so far. The first of our two Parent Teacher Student interviews took place online on Monday 15 March with the second session scheduled for Thursday 25 March. By all accounts the evening ran to plan and we were able to avoid wait queues onsite.

On Thursday this week we hosted Cultural Diversity and Harmony Day celebrations. Our main event today was food tastings. We have a number of groups of MGSC students who are making different foods from all around the world for the food tastings representing countries such as Japan, China, Brazilian, Vietnamese, Indian, Iraqi, Filipino and Australian.

Kind regards
