Sports Committee

With Term 1 sport in full swing, we saw fourteen wins last week in Volleyball, Tennis, AFL, and Indoor Cricket.  For those who know, sport at MTA used to be in trimesters but, since the introduction of ATAR, the CaSSSA competition has changed to term sport.  This means that sport will look a little different this year and into the future; however, the meaning of it will never change.  Sport isn’t just activity and competition, but fun, memorable, and a learning experience.  In this week’s Activities Corner, we are going to take a look back on Mt A’s greatest sporting moments.

A personal experience of mine:

I was in Year 8 and we were at CaSSSA Athletics.  My first race of the day was the 800m. The previous year I came third in this event, making it a bigger deal for me to do well. However, I remember talking to Ms B and she was telling me about her experience in running the 800m and she set me a goal to run a specific time.  Anyway, we were called to stand behind the line and the gun went.  I started off slowly and gradually built up my speed.  I don’t remember much about the race and neither do I remember hearing the cheering, but I finished the race coming in first position by two seconds, making this my greatest sporting moment at Mt A.  To this day I believe I was so motivated by our team and Ms B; it made me proud to be running for Mt A which motivated me to get the points for the College.

As a captain I am inspired by everyone’s stories and sporting moments that motivate and inspire them to be the best possible athlete!  So together let’s make memories and create your own greatest sporting moment.

Sport plays a significant role in the life of a student at Mount Alvernia.  Sport gives a healthy and positive outlook but also enables students to develop skills in teamwork, resilience, and other skills.  Tanna-Lai Hornung is all about swimming success at Mount Alvernia, having her first swimming lesson at the age of three in her family pool.  It didn’t take long before she was swimming for her primary school at six.  Throughout all her competitions, Tanna-Lai believes that her best sporting moment in swimming so far is when she was eleven or twelve and won in the girls 800m at Junior Mets, this her first medal of many to come.  Now at Mount Alvernia, she has continued with her success.  By representing our college through CASSA and interschool carnivals on multiple occasions, she has placed second in the 50-freestyle heat with a time of 30.65 seconds, first in the 50-butterfly heat with a time of 34.2 seconds, third in the freestyle relay, and fourth in the IM relay.  Tanna-Lai likes swimming as it provides a sense of fullness and happiness; she swims so that she can gain more knowledge and experience on her fundamental techniques so that she can improve in all aspects of a race.  She encourages all students to be involved and have a go in school swim carnivals, try-outs, and classes.
