Stories of Impact

Love and Redemption: Year 7 text study

In Year 7 English, students studied the novel The Bronze Bow during Term 3. The story plays off in the time that Jesus walked the earth, and tells about a young Galilean boy, Daniel, who hates the Romans, as they had caused the death of both his parents. When a slave saves Daniel's life, Jesus teaches him that love can achieve much more than revenge can. Daniel learns to forgive and to conquer his hate for the Romans when Jesus heals his sister.

One of the extension assignments students could do, was to express love and redemption in a creative way. Chavella Tanubrata created an artwork that beautifully displayed the interplay of these themes from The Bronze Bow.

What a privilege it is to share our faith with our students and to see them responding out of their hearts!

Cyber wisdom

In Middle School, it will soon be exam time for our Year 7 and 8 students. As exams take place in Week 7, the pressure is on for our students to keep up with homework and other assignments. It is both critical and inevitable in today’s educational framework that more and more work gets done on some type of device. As teachers, we need to prepare our students for a technology-based future, but we also want to see them become responsible citizens of that future. Parents have an important role in partnering with the school to help students use their devices wisely, without being constantly distracted by social media.

The article linked below stresses this balancing act and the role of parents to help assure that their children get sufficient time away from the screen in order to improve their sleeping patterns and help them to concentrate better. Creating solid house rules around the use of social media during Middle School years, will give parents the advantage to direct the amount of hours their children spend on cyber media even in later years.

Year 8 “Astronaut Stories” Masterclass

On Wednesday, 20 September 2017, 10 selected students from Year 8 went to Scienceworks for the Astronaut Stories STEM workshop. First, we heard a former astronaut, Dumitru-DorinPrunariu, talk about his exciting career (he was the first Romanian to go into outer space) and the history of space exploration! Then, we got to work designing and building mini-rockets, seeing which one could go the highest. We had a blast and learned lots about space!
