Swinburne Entrepreneurship Excursion

On Friday 1 November, Ms Gibson accompanied a group of Year 10s to attend an entrepreneurship workshop for secondary students at Swinburne University.  The event was planned and run by Swinburne Entrepreneurship Masters students and was staged at the Hawthorn campus, moderated by Bakers Delight founder, Lesley Gillespie.  It included an interesting range of panel discussions with dynamic Australian business people including Dominic Pym from Up Banking, Poppy King, the lipstick queen, Fergus Creese who studied the Entrepreneurship Masters degree at Swinburne University and who has founded mycareer.com and Myles Munro, a leader in the local hospitality industry who has pioneered food trucks including Mr Burger

Key insights included:

  • Dream big, start small, work hard, what are you interested in?
  • Confidence and curiosity
  • Failure is necessary and important – it’s what you learn from it that counts

Poppy King shared her mantra with the group:

Something simple

Something true

Something consistent

A point of view

India Warren-Smith (MGC, Year 10) participated in the panel discussion asking considered and insightful questions.
