Stop the Press!!

Just as this issue is being sent to the ‘printers’, our Intermediate Hockey Team have just won the SSV State Championships by defeating Monivae College 4-1 in the final.

For many of our athletes, this is not their first Hockey Gold Medal. For the majority of the Year 9’s in the team, this is their 3rd Gold Medal in a row. Congratulations to the team for reaping the rewards of all their skill and hard work.

I have included a few photos from the event, but keep an eye out for an extensive report about all the highlights of the day.

MGC Sports Awards Breakfast

Earlier this month we celebrated the sporting achievements of our students at the annual Sports Awards breakfast. In total, 63 students were nominated for and received an award for either their sporting achievements for any of the MGC sporting teams or for their involvements in sport outside of school.

Some highlight were:

  • Laura Hingston (class of 2013) was our guest of honour and awards presenter. As an elite diver and ex-MGC student, she was the perfect choice to speak to the audience about the highs and lows of being an athlete as well as fitting it all in with our commitments.
  • Over 100 guests attended, which was the largest attendance in recent years
  • The sports captains prepared an amazingly tasty and healthy breakfast consisting of muffins, muesli and yoghurt, fresh fruit and croissants
  • We recognised 7 athletes who competed for Australia in their chosen sport
  • 6 athletes received Sporting Colours for their selection for a TeamVIC side or for winning an SSV State Championship medal

The list of all award winners are included in this newsletter, as well as some information about Laura’s career so far and her aspirations to compete at the Tokyo Olympics in 2020.

Laura Hingston

“A wasted session is not because you’re tired or sore, it’s because you had a bad attitude. A strong focus and positive mindset goes a long way”

Laura, an Alumni of Melbourne Girls’ College 2013, as experienced all the high and lows of the career as a professional

Having started out as an Elite Gymnast during high school, Laura suffered a back injury in Year 10, forcing her to take some time off to recover from surgery.

The fickle nature of high performance sport meant that she was forced to make a decision about her competitive future, continue with Gymnastic or to take her skills across to the swimming pool and become an Elite Diver. Luckily she had the support of the VIS who helped make the transition as smooth as possible.

Laura has not looked back and her highlights reel shows that she made the right decision. She is a multiple State Champion (including a run of 4 State Championships in a row), a silver medallist at the 2017 Malaysian Grand Prix and her most recent highlight, placing 5th at the World championships in South Korea.

Looking ahead to the future, Laura has her sights set on securing a spot on the Australian Olympic Team for Tokyo 2020.
