Celebrating World Environment Day

World Environment Day (WED) occurs on the 5 June annually, and is the United Nation’s principal vehicle for encouraging awareness and action for the protection of our environment. WED has become a global platform for public outreach, with participation from over 143 countries. This year celebrated the event’s 18th anniversary.

The theme for this year’s event was: ‘Beat Plastics Pollution’, and the challenge was “If you can’t reuse it, refuse it!” The World Environment Day celebration was organised by the Brimbank City Council (BBC) Environmental Education officer, Karina King. The day included an entertaining and informative performance by Mrs Ticklebottom, illustrating the issues of plastic pollution and how we can fix it. Additionally, the Mayor, Cr Margaret Giudice launched the Council’s new recycling and litter strategy.

The four schools who attended the event were University Park PS, St Albans Meadow PS, Catholic Regional College and of course, St Albans Secondary College (SASC). Our SEAL class really enjoyed celebrating World Environment Day with teachers, Ms Donaldson, Ms Mortimer and Mr Steven Vo. Furthermore, Year 7F students - Victoria Au, Dragon Fan, Wendy Huang, Belinda Nguyen, Tania Santhosh and Preet Trivedi spoke confidently about the positive sustainability activities implemented at SASC.

Our key message was that “teachers and students need to work together to reduce waste at our school.”
