Girledworld WOW Summit

This event was run on 16 & 17 June at RMIT and girls aged 14-18 were invited to attend.

The purpose of the Summit was to bring a diverse mix of Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) experts together with young women to help equip and educate the next generation of girls with the skillsets, mindsets and techsets they’ll need to lead, succeed and thrive in the ever changing, technology dominated 21st century workplaces.

RMIT sponsored 50 girls from partnership schools (Schools Network Access Program partners – of which St Albans Secondary is one) around Melbourne to attend the 2 day event. Our college was lucky enough to have 9 students from years’ 9 – 12 attend. The event was advertised on our COMPASS system and girls had to follow a link to apply and RMIT selected the successful candidates based on their applications.

Participants came back feeling really inspired and have built networks with RMIT, STEM experts and like-minded students from other schools.

Janet Huynh from 9H reports:

“The girledworld WOW (World of Work) Summit partnered with RMIT University that ran for two days, it was an eye-opening experience and opportunity to meet and hear from top speakers, industry experts, career mentors and the first female elected as Lord Mayor of Melbourne, Sally Capp! Other guests that attended were the Microsoft Chief Digital Advisor, Airbnb Lead Interior Designer, UniSuper Chief Information Officer, Zoos Victoria award-winning Educator, Career4Connect Career Consultant, professional CEOs, entrepreneurs, to name a few.

It was an interesting weekend because it allowed the time for high school students to develop interactive learning, problem solving, leadership, industry mentorship and entrepreneurship skill-building. All attendees were exposed to empowering educators that equipped students with ideas and preparation about their individual career pathway for the future.

It's not every day you get the chance to learn and develop all those skills in just two days! I especially want to thank girledworld, SNAP (Schools Network Access Program) and Ms Armstrong for providing a great opportunity for me to be a part of the girledworld WOW Summit this year”.

Laura Van Keulen (School Captain Year 12) writes:

If I was to describe the Girled World,  World of Work Summit in one word it would definitely be inspiring. The two days consisted of women sharing their stories with us and we were able to see that we can also do amazing things in the world, just like them and then brainstorming some of the world’s biggest problems and pitching a solution. Over the two days we learnt so much about the world of work for women and top tips for success. It was a really rewarding experience and I am so grateful to the RMIT SNAP program and Ms Armstrong who shared this opportunity and scholarship with me and the other attendees from SASC.
