Literacy
Reading
This term in Reading, Level 3/4 students are learning about a variety of reading comprehension strategies. These will include ‘questioning’, ‘analysing and evaluating’, ‘author's purpose’ and ‘words in context’.
Weekly focus:
Weeks 1-2: Questioning
Week 2-3: Analysing and Evaluating
Week 4: Revision
Weeks 5-6: Author's Purpose
Week 7: Excursion/Camp
Weeks 8-9: Words in Context
Weeks 10-11: Revision
Writing
Throughout Term 4, students will be focusing on poetry and procedural writing. They will develop skills in recognising the structure and features of different styles of poetry and the structure of a procedural text. Students will be focusing on the writing traits of ideas and word choice in poetry, and organisation for procedural texts.
Weekly focus:
Weeks 1-6: Introduction to poetry. Exploring haiku, cinquain, free verse, limericks and sonnets. Students will learn about features such as similes, syllables, repetition, rhyme and alliteration.
Week 7: Camp
Weeks 8-11: Procedural texts. Students will be introduced to the structure and organisation of procedural texts and have many opportunities to write their own.
Spelling and Grammar
We will continue to use the school wide Jolly Phonics program which gives students five essential skills for reading and writing: Learning the letter sounds, Learning letter formation, Blending, Identifying sounds in words, and Tricky words. In grammar we will be learning about nouns, adjectives, pronouns, verbs, adverbs, conjunctions, prepositions, grammatical person, homophones, prefixes, suffixes and tenses.

Week 1: <st> for the /s/ sound
Week 2: Grammar - suffix <-al>
Weeks 3: Silent Letter digraphs
Week 4: Plural possessive nouns
Week 5: cup week
Week 6: <-ically> sound and root words, prefixes and suffixes.
Week 7: Camp/Excursion
Week 8: Schwa <al> and grammatical person (1st, 2nd and 3rd person)
Week 9: Schwa <el> and changing grammatical person
Week 10: Schwa <il> and parsing verbs
Maths
Our Level 3/4 students are in for an exciting term in the area of mathematics.
Fractions - This term, we will investigate equivalent fractions, proper and improper fractions as well as mixed numbers. We will use number lines, worded problems and hands on materials to explore fractions.
Money - In the area of money, students will solve problems involving purchases and the calculation of change.
Length/Mass and Capacity - We will measure and compare length, mass and capacity with the use of a variety of scaled instruments.
Chance - In the area of chance, students will describe and order chance events. We will identify events and how they are affected by the occurrence of another.
Shape - Our students will compare and describe 2 and3 dimensional shapes, combine and split common shapes and explain properties.

Inquiry - Australia: Tour Down Under
In Inquiry this term, Level 3/4 are learning about Geography. Students will be using inquiry skills to learn about Australia’s states and territories. They will develop an understanding of where the borders are, the names of our different states, territories and capital cities, major landmarks (natural and man-made), the importance of our landmarks, and how to read a map.
These are the level essential questions students will engage in throughout the inquiry unit:
- Where is Australia?
- What are the states and territories?
- What are the capital cities of each state and territory?
- What are the landmarks?
- Why are our landmarks important?
- What are the emblems and flags of each state?
