We had some very exciting news last week with two Year 9 students winning significant external Writing Competitions.
Julie Hoang (MacKillop 1) submitted a wonderful short story in response to the prompt ‘Stories that Change’ for VATE’s 2021 Writing Competition and won the Year 9 & 10 category, which comes with a $150 book voucher from The Little Bookroom, a selection of books, and her story will be published in the next edition of Idiom (The journal of the Victorian Association for the Teaching of English). Last year Julie won the Jacaranda Short Story prize and her story was published in the Year 7 & 8 English Text. Julie has drawn on her Vietnamese heritage to enrich her writing, and her prize-winning story this year tells the story of a Vietnamese teenager coming to Australia as an International Student. The beautifully told story addresses the themes of racism and family expectations. You can read Julie’s story titled ‘Away’ here: Stories That Change - 2021 writing competition | Victorian Association for the Teaching of English (vate.org.au)
Marli Di Pilla (Knox 1) submitted a powerful pair of poems in response to the prompt ‘Chasing Happiness’ for the Shared Stories Anthology Semester 1 Writing competition and has won the Year 7-9 category with a $50 prize. Marli won the Shared Stories Anthology poetry prize last year and writes with incredible maturity and depth and control. The poems she entered this year respectively explore the perspectives of a female and a male in a relationship who are pursuing happiness in very different ways. You can read Marli’s poetry on the Shared Stories Anthology Instagram Account @sharedstories1
We congratulate Julie and Marli who are incredibly talented and passionate about their writing. They are wonderful ambassadors for our college.
