It has been a busy start to the term in Careers … check out what has been going on ……
Year 10 LEAP
Our LEAPsters have made a good start to their TAFE program this semester. Last Thursday we headed off to Swinburne Institute in Wantirna to the KIOSC Centre. The aim of KIOSC is to enhance the work of schools by engaging students in authentic career-focused learning experiences. Their programs are inquiry based and incorporate a wide range of activities, current technologies and scenarios.
Some of the things our students will be using and learning are as follows -They will be making prototypes for an arcade game, learning about electrical components and circuits, using adobe illustrator for a marketing angle, and experimenting with TECH Sprint and TinkerCAD/Fusion 360/Cura.
They will be working on creating Instagram posts, photoshop and videos for a Pitch and Presentation Workshop and will be doing a Shark Tank presentation of their final work.
Our students were totally engaged in this lesson last week and can’t wait to go back to Swinburne for their weekly class. Hopefully lockdown won’t keep us away for too long !
Subject Selection and Career Profiling
Subject selection is upon us and it is time for students to choose the subjects they would like to undertake next year.
This is often trickier than it seems as students in Year 10 need to choose subjects that will lead into the VCE subjects that are prerequisites for entry into University study. Sometimes, you don’t even know what you want to do in your future yet !
The best advice we can give students is do the subjects you like and are good at!
This is the best way to gain contentment and satisfaction in our VCE and our Tertiary study. There is no use doing a subject that the student does not enjoy because it will lead to a course at uni – that is the first indication that the course may not be the right one for them.
To assist students with this decision, all Year 9’s and all Year 10 students had the opportunity this week to complete an online career profiling tool that looked at the interests, skills and personality of students. This in turn then suggested careers that would suit them. This was a starting point to research some careers and industries that may not have been considered.
For Year 9 students that missed out or did not complete this, please see the attachment to this article EXPLORING YOUR CAREER. There is also a worksheet attachment – START YOUR JOURNEY - that would maximize accessing relevant information.
Year 10 students went a little deeper. Nazareth has purchased an online, live profile for each year 10 students that can be built on over the next three years !
This tool is calledThe Careers Department. The profiling tool can be completed in 15 minutes but the research facilities are AWESOME!
Students can find out about what an industry is REALLY like through check lists, short videos, phone call interviews, FAQ and Facts and Job Maps. It will indicate jobs that are similar or under the same umbrella and even suggest what subjects you need to choose to go into these careers.
For the Year 10s who missed out – you can check out the attachment, register, create your profile and then get started on checking things out.
REMEMBER .….. YOU WILL HAVE ACCESS TO YOUR PROFILE UNTIL YOU LEAVE NAZ AND CAN BUILD ON THIS AS MANY TIMES AS YOU LIKE!
Years 10 , 11 and 12
