Homeroom Art Challenge
Earlier this term, Homerooms from Years 7 to 12 were invited to produce a collaborative artwork that reflects the current state of our environment today. Students were encouraged to use recycled or upcycled materials and incorporate a hopeful and constructive message regarding the importance of caring for our environment.
This year we had incredibly creative entries including sculptures, posters, and wearable art constructed out of plastic bags, water bottles, toilet paper roles, tissue boxes, masks, straws, and many other imaginative materials, all encouraging a message of sustainability.
Congratulations to our winners pictured in the attached slideshow.
Japanese Year 7s – International Fashion Parade
Last week the Year 7 Japanese students celebrated their skills in Japanese by putting on an International Fashion Parade. Students dressed up in costumes from countries throughout the world. Then they paired up and introduced their partners in Japanese as they walked down the catwalk. Introductions included where their ‘international tomodachi’ was from, their favourite food, drink, sport and of course the fashions they were wearing. The students were ‘sugoi’ (awesome).
Thank you to Year 6B and Year 2G students for being such an amazing audience. Arigato, Aghdasi Sensei for this great activity.

St Louis Day - 24 June 2021
Yesterday St Louis students celebrated their House Day at John XXIII College. Over the past week we have been reflecting on the life of our patron St Aloysius Gonzaga. On St Louis Day we shared a lunch in the hall and celebrated some of the outstanding contributions from St Louis students so far this year. Homeroom teachers and other House staff were asked to put forward the names of students who had made an extra effort with regards to Homeroom time or House spirit.
St Louis students and staff were also involved in cooking meals for The Shopfront after school on Tuesday. Lots of fun was had and hopefully the meals prove to be delicious. The celebration culminated today with a special focus at the Community Mass on Saint Aloysius Gonzaga and St Louis students were eagerly involved in the Mass. We were extremely lucky to have a Jesuit Priest, Fr Iain Radvan SJ, leading the mass for this special occasion.
It was a pleasure to see all students enthusiastically involved in our House Day celebration. A special mention must be made to the House staff and our various student leaders for their help in organising the day.

Australian History Competition
This week, students from Years 8 and 9 took part in the Australian History Competition. This nationwide competition is Australia’s largest history competition – and is a great opportunity for students to develop crucial skills such as seeing different points of view. The competition tests student's interpretation and analysis rather than prior knowledge – and all participants receive a Certificate of Participation.

Food for thought - Refugee Week
This year Refugee Week (June 18-24) is calling us to help build a more cohesive community by showcasing the powerful potential of unity.
John XXIII College aims to raise awareness about the issues affecting refugees, and to celebrate the positive contributions refugees have made to Australian society through a range of activities. The College welcomed the Fare Go Food Truck, a social enterprise staffed by refugees and asylum seekers serving up delicious cultural comfort food. The love of food knows no borders. It can connect people from all parts of the world. Students and staff at the College were provided with the opportunity to eat, share and connect while empowering refugees and asylum seekers through employment.
The College also supported a food drive for the Centre for Asylum Seekers, Refugees and Detainees (CARAD). CARAD is a not-for-profit, unaffiliated organisation committed to advocating for asylum seekers, refugees and detainees in WA. Many of their clients do not have the right to work and are ineligible for government financial support making food drive appeals a valuable lifeline. Students were provided with a list of items required and donated them via their homerooms.
Being people for others is a core value for the students at John XXIII College. Students are consistently encouraged and presented with opportunities to become more compassionate individuals and to develop and awareness of the situations that are developing in their world where they can actively participate in, in order to seek justice.
Tung's Story - Class 1987
John XXIII College has a strong history and tradition of providing education to those who may otherwise not have had this opportunity. Hear Tung Nguyen’s story (Class 1987), who was a refugee to Australia and get an insight into his experiences of resettling in Perth and gaining an education offered by John XXIII College. Mock Trials
Round 3 of the 2021 Law Society of Western Australia Mock Trial Competition was held on Monday night at the Supreme Court. Our team went up against Wesley College - appearing for the Prosecution in a criminal matter involving aggravated assault.
Our Round 2 Team included:
- Barrister 1: Rebecca Harsanyi
- Barrister 2: Benjamin Negus
- Solicitor: Lucinda Schubert
- Witness 1: Kady Wall
- Witness 2: Timothy Gardner
- Judges Associate: Thomas Williams
Whilst the team as whole performed admirably, a special mention has to be made to Benjamin Negus – who was singled out by the Judge for his outstanding cross-examination of the defence witness. The Judge remarked in his summary that he has never given a student full marks before, however Benjamin’s line of questioning was flawless.
There is a lot of preparation involved in the lead up to the trial, and I would like to take this opportunity to thank the students who, despite their busy schedules, enthusiastically attended lunchtime meetings. I would also like to thank Ms Rita de Faria (Y12 ADP), who came along on the night to offer support.
Well done to our Mock Trial Team on their 2021 season.
