AUTOMOTIVE SAFETY

ENGINEERING (ASE)

Rachelle De Fazio

It is an exciting time for anyone initiating the process of independence and earning that much desired learner’s permit. Road science in year 10 physics stresses the importance of safety around driving ability, the car features and the surrounding road including the barriers that are designed to reduce the severity of crashes.

Friday 18 June was a day for students to meet the team at the Automotive Safety Engineering (ASE) at Lonsdale. This company is an award-winning Australian based company that specialises in providing a wide range of testing, research and engineering services, including a variety of products such as energy absorbing bollards and temporary barriers.

The students were able to observe a cargo barrier and bull bar being tested for compliance with safety specifications for car manufacturers. As the formulas for acceleration and Newton's laws were being applied and explained, the most exciting demonstration was the high-speed testing up to 110km/hr, using a full-scale crash test into a concrete wall. Many students were able to connect with the learning, asked valuable and insightful questions and hopefully reveal a deeper understanding as they move towards their responsibilities behind the wheel.

A big thanks to the students that attended and staff support from Jarrod Chave, Chris Robinson and Dave Dryden. Also to ASE for hosting our students.
