Faith Matters

                         At St Francis Xavier School

Dear St Francis Xavier Families,

During prayer time with the children this week we reflected on a couple of the many acts of kindness and sportsmanship demonstrated during the 2021 Tokyo Olympics.  While it was inspiring to view the sporting prowess and talent of the world's athletes I found myself being drawn to the underlying stories of kindness and goodwill.

One of these was agreeing to share the gold medal rather than go to a first and second place 'jump off', by high jumpers Tamberi of Italy and Barshim of Qatar.  Each one recognising the excellence of the other and choosing not to take all the glory for oneself.

"Sharing with a friend is even more beautiful. This is beyond sport."

"This is the message we deliver to the young generation."

(Tamberi and Barshim)

What a wonderful example of consideration and fair play, especially at this elite level. I think it's also very telling of their values and beliefs.  It's always great to be able to use these sorts of real life examples to help our children connect with how our Catholic beliefs and values permeate life in today's world - to show them the messages and behaviours of Jesus being modelled in the words and actions of others.

Several of the teachers mentioned this prayer session generated some really interesting questions and discussion especially as the Olympics is such a topic of interest.

This Sunday is the Feast of the Assumption of Mary.  Our Lady, who is considered the greatest of all saints, provides a wonderful role model for others through her courage, strength, humility and devotion.

Blessings to you all.
