VCE PRODUCT DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY: TEXTILES STUDY TOUR
On March 27 the VCE Textiles class embarked on a weeklong study tour in Melbourne.
The aim of the trip was to meet outcomes from their studies and explore design and innovation in the city, with the hope of inspiring our students through viewing art and culture beyond their local community.
After a long bus trip, students were immediately immersed in activities, beginning with watching 'The Project' as members of the studio audience. In the days that followed, the group went to Top Designs at the Melbourne Museum to see the best work from previous Product Design and Technology students across Victoria and view their folios. They also went to the NGV to view the Alexander McQueen exhibition, participated in a fashion drawing workshop at The Whitehouse Institute of Design and took part in a creative design challenge at the MPavillion.
Other activities included a street art tour and stencil workshop, a visit to RMIT and a look at Fashion Now at the Ian Potter Centre. Evening activities included a night at the theatre to see Mary Poppins with its incredible costumes. The group also enjoyed an AFL match.
Through all these events, students were able to make connections between not just fashion and design, but product design in general. They gained insight into why we design different products for different purposes, including fashion.
All these experiences will inform the work in their current studies, and we can’t wait to see what they will design and make this year.
VO TEXTILES
Students (pictured left to right – Julia O’Bryan, Jessica Labura, Georgiana Rule) designed and constructed their own eco-tote bags. Bags are made from calico, and the designs feature an iron-on vinyl eco-slogan and image.
Students explored the impact of plastic waste prior to designing their bags and created the bags as a response to reducing their impact on the environment.
