Senior School Report

Senior School Assistant Principal update

I wish to congratulate all of our senior year students for their commitment to their studies in term 1, 2023 that has proven to be a busy and academically challenging start for the commencement of our first year cohort. The students have demonstrated their academic capacity to be focused on meeting and exceeding the expectations set by Victorian Curriculum Assessment Authority (VCAA) for VCE and new embedded Vocational Major that has replaced the VCAL program. Our students have embraced the opportunities to be involved in range of academic and extra curricular activities that support their academic and career aspirations such as our year 10 students attending the Hume/Whittlesea Career Networking Event, the excursion to GTAC Victoria's leading Life Sciences education centre, at Melbourne University offering innovative and collaborative programs in cell and molecular biology and our highly successful year 12 Surf and Study Camp. The Surf & Study Camp was design to "hot house" our Year 12 students by accelerating their preparations for year 12 examinations that involved us delivering a workshop focused on writing skills for VCE and data literacy and exam vocabulary delivered Hayley Harris and Rob Park who are specialist educational consultants.

Term 2, April Progress Reports

The release of the Term 2, April Progress Reports is important opportunity to discuss your child's learning growth and achievements and or areas for improvement. I urge all carers to review your child's attendance, progress towards achieving the academic requirements and that they are demonstrating the schools values through their behaviour.  It is important that all students are aware of the Promotions Policy requirements and are working towards being eligible for their individual study and career pathway which will be determined by the effort.  So, I urge all parents to discuss with your child their term 2, April Progress Report.

Career networking excursion

On Thursday 23rd of March our Year 10 students attended the Career Networking for Young people expo at Plenty Ranges Arts & Convention Centre. Upon arrival students were given a presentation by the Australian Defence Force followed by a second presentation about the job and career growth in the Whittlesea region. After the presentation students were given an expo passport that students needed to get signed off at each of the stalls. It was a highlight to see so many students engaged in the expo approaching a variety of TAFE and University stalls to gather information about their future career. Students left the expo with a renewed excitement and ambition to chase their dream careers.

Year 11

Year 11 overview and key messages

Well done on the first term of VCE year 11 students. It has been a busy, but overall very successful term for year 11 students. This term, the year 11 cohort has shown a considerable commitment to their studies and continuing to build their skills and knowledge as they progress into their VCE journeys. As a sub school we would like to congratulate the year 11's for this great start to the year!

The year 11 team would like to share some important messages to parents and guardians to ensure that the year 11 cohort continue to progress throughout the year.

  • Every day counts! - In VCE students are required to be at school at least 90% of the time. If students are away this means that they will miss vital content that is covered in class. This can then cause students to become more stressed and effect their studies.
  • If your child is away please let us know - If your child is going to miss a day of school please either contact the front office or place the reason on compass. This is important information that the Year 11 team use to help support your child's engagement with their school work.
  • Medical certificates - If your child misses a SAC (school assessed coursework) they must provide a medical certificate. This can be either handed to the front office, or the senior school office.
  • Moving into winter uniform in term 2- As we progress into term 2 students will start to transition into winter uniform. Please over the holidays check that your child's winter uniform fits. If you need more uniform but are experiencing financial hardship please contact the college to see how we can assist.

Year 11 student spotlight profile

Lucinda Groppi - Early access Year 12 Psychology

What early access subject are you studying: I'm studying unit 3 and 4 Psychology (year 12). In Unit 3, we have been learning about how the brain works and how we process information. We have also covered specific topics such as operant conditioning, classical conditioning, sensation and perception.

Who is your early access year 12 teacher: My teacher is Chloe. She is an awesome teacher! She makes class really fun but also makes the content easy to learn.

Would you recommend doing an early access VCE subject?  Yes, I would recommend it. I feel like doing a year 12 subject in year 11 takes off a little bit of stress when you enter year 12 because you already  have an idea of what it's like when you do early access. It also builds your exam skills which is going help when you sit most of your year 12 exams in the following year.

What is one bit of advice you would give to a student thinking of doing early access VCE? One bit of advice I would give is to try to be as orgainised as possible and stay up to date with classwork and homework. Also, get into a routine when doing homework or study so you can spread it out over the week and still do other hobbies.

VCE Vocational Major - Literacy based cooking

As part of the unit 1 literacy, students had to research, write and follow a healthy meal recipe. This unit allowed students to build upon their literacy skills and demonstrate clear written communication and following a procedure. What a great way to demonstrate a learning outcome by designing and cooking a delicious meal!

Year 12

Year 12 Surf & Study Camp

The Surf and Study Camp to Lorne was a great success

Student account

This surf camp was an amazing experience; the camp to end all camps. From the bus ride to the activities we did (like surfing, volleyball and study workshops) every moment was a fun and memorable one. The surfing workshops benefitted me in a way that it could not usually, when I surf by myself. I learned how to assist others, when they needed help, and how to work as a team to support each other. The study workshops taught me important skills that will aid me when coming up to exams.

This camp was one of making memories, which made it all worth it, and one that I will never forget.

Year 12 Vocational Major - Field trip to the Melbourne Zoo

On Tuesday the 4th of April, the Year 12 VM students went on an excursion to Melbourne Zoo as part of their Personal Development Skills work. The students met at Epping Station in the morning and travelled to the Melbourne Zoo via public transport. This helps students develop their ability to travel independently using public transport, an important skill as many prepare to enter the workforce. At the zoo, the students participated in an educational session where they planned a project to support animals and the environment. The students brainstormed the ways they could help animals including collecting rubbish from the surrounding areas, using this to create art and eventually selling it to raise donation funds for the Melbourne Zoo.

The students worked as a team to brainstorm what roles and responsibilities they would need to fulfil for this future project. After this, the students had time to walk around the zoo and visit many of the animals there. Afterwards, the students travelled home once again via public transport. Staff would like to commend students for their efforts during the excursion and the way they conducted themselves in public. In particular, thank you to the many students who offered seats up to elderly people on public transport or moved out of the way for young children at the zoo. All students represented our college proudly and we look forward to seeing what comes of their project!

Year 12 Biology Excursion - GTAC

The year 12 students traveled in to GTAC (Gene Technology Access Centre) on the 3/4/23. During the session the students completed two practical experiments:

  • Gel electrophoresis
  • Gene cloning using recombinant and transformed bacteria

Throughout the day the students worked in small groups with mentor scientists that are current PHD students at The University of Melbourne. Overall, the year 12 class had a great day building their skills in a lab and are looking forward to returning for another program in Unit 4.
