Torres Strait

Islander Conference

From the CSO Director Mr Chris Smyth

Karen Tighe, Subject Matter Expert: Indigenous Education K-12; Justin Matthews, School Performance Leader and  Hanne Pedersen, Coordinator: Wii Gaay Program and Cultural Assessments launched the 2024 Catholic Schools NSW Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander State Education Conference that will be held from  22–24 October 2024 at the Tamworth Regional Entertainment and Conference Centre (TRECC). The Conference theme of Spirit on Country—then, now and always has been selected to bring together some of the most innovative and influential thinkers in Aboriginal education.

The conference will cover a wide range of topics with keynote speakers, panel discussions, workshops and on-Country opportunities. The goal of the conference is to foster Country, culture, community and curriculum, sharing knowledge and insights through thought-provoking discussions and experiences.

Our system of schools has a rich Indigenous culture encapsulating the stories of community Elders and families who are deeply connected physically and spiritually to the land. We are honoured to host this event which will be an outstanding opportunity to showcase the very high quality work that happens in our schools every day to ensure that our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students are not only reaching their potential, but will ensure that they go on to enjoy the life opportunities made possible by a great Catholic education.

This work in our schools is supported by the fabulous opportunities offered to our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students at both Wii Gaay and Warraymalaya, and through our unique work in the area of cultural assessments.

We anticipate attracting over 500 delegates including staff, students, community, and leaders of Catholic schools across NSW. We will welcome educators from across the state to immerse themselves in our region, strengthening the strong partnership and connection between education and community practitioners who share unique perspectives on building systems that allow Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and families to thrive. We are confident that this conference will be an enriching and inspiring experience for all participants.

The last 5 years has seen an increase in our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander enrolments across the Diocese of Armidale. Our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students are now 15% of our total student population. This is clear evidence that we are doing a great job of welcoming our Indigenous students and meeting their specific learning needs, and I thank you all most sincerely for your efforts.
