Celebrating Freedom: Passover Seder Meal with Texts and Traditions Students

Feasting is a spiritual practice many of us can support with our whole hearts – and stomachs! Last Thursday our Unit 1/2 Texts and Traditions students invited their parents and crafted a delightful immersive theology lesson based on the Exodus and the Torah teachings on freedom.

Traditionally, a Passover meal is shared during the feast of unleavened bread, a time of remembering God’s redemption of the Hebrew slaves out of Egypt. This tradition, practised by Jews all over the world, holds meaning and purpose for many Christians who are discovering its power as they prepare for Easter.

Over a meal of lamb and unleavened bread, seasoned with bitter herbs (representing the bitterness of slavery) and salty water (representing the tears of God’s people, enslaved) and through an array of symbolic elements, we walked the journey of a people casting off oppression, and seeking a new identify in freedom.

As the students shared their prepared reflections on the meaning of four cups – representing salvation, deliverance, redemption and praise, the ancient story pointed again and again to the rescuer who would come, just in time, to bring the ultimate example of loving self-sacrifice.

In a world of full calendars and years rushing by so fast, this simple act of sharing a meal and stories together stands as a powerful and subversive act:

“Future generations will hear about the wonders of the Lord – Our children will also serve Him.”  Psalm 22

EISM Champions Swimming Carnival

Kylie Thorpe - Health and PE Coordinator

Our DCC champions ventured into MSAC to compete in the EISM Champions Swimming Carnival. A team of 32 students received the invite from the last EISM Division One round which was a very impressive number.

We were super chuffed to see all 32 students compete at such a high level with the added bonus of a number of students coming home with medals around their necks.

The following students placed in their events:

1st Place

U16 Boys Medley Relay – Barnabas Santostefano, Josh McMillan, Thomas Greenwood and Isaac Williamson

U13 Girls Breaststroke – Charisse Chan

2nd Place

U13 Boys – 50m individual Backstroke & 50m individual Breaststroke - Joshua Spence

U16 Boys – 50m individual Breaststroke – Thomas Greenwood

I’d love to congratulate each and every one of the students for progressing through House sports, squad trainings on Monday mornings, division one and then finishing with a champions meet. They are all true champions!

I’d also like to acknowledge the hours (some very early) that TJ Spence, Mrs Townend, Mr Botha and Mr Turner have put into this team. The effort, knowledge and expertise that each of these teachers/coaches have put into this team has been of great benefit.

Thank you!
