Australasian Problem Solving Mathematical Olympiad (APSMO)

This week, 27 Year 7 & 8 students completed the first of four Australasian Problem Solving Mathematical Olympiad (APSMO) competitions. A challenging set of maths problems designed specifically for high achieving students. It has been great to see so many students nominated by their teachers to participate and develop their problem solving skills. We, along with Head of Mathematics Hannah Windsor, look forward to seeing how each individual improves over the competitions.

Kidneys, Stawberries & Play-Doh!

Year 11 have been busy in the science labs! Biology students have been making model plant cells and animal cells to demonstrate the similarities and differences in structure and organelles, and dissecting kidneys to study their structure and relate this to function. The Year 11s have also been demonstrating the positive effect of temperature on the rate of diffusion by comparing how fast tannins were released from tea leaves in hot and cold water, and measuring the effect of increasing the surface area to volume ratio on the rate of diffusion.

Year 9 and 10 students joined in the discoveries with Year 9 making batteries from lemons and, less successfully, from potatoes, and Year 10s dissecting kidneys and using tools and materials that can be found at home to extract the DNA (genetic material) from strawberries.
