What is the subject about?
Product design looks to improve quality of life by designing creative, innovative and sustainable products. In Units 1 & 2, students assume the role as a designer, by exploring real-world problems while working both individually and within a team environment.
Working through the design process, students develop and apply their knowledge of design, materials and textiles to present multiple solutions to everyday life situations.
Students get to experiment and develop their dressmaking and material manipulation skills, develop their understanding of sustainability practices and consider the importance of the product design industry’s future.
Skills you will develop include:
- Understand and apply the product design process
- Analyse practices of designers that address sustainability issues
- Use materials, tools and processes to assemble your own design.
- Evaluate key processes in relation to the broader textiles industry and own practice

Textiles or PDT is an amazing subject. In This class I get to show my ideas and creativity, I also get to learn about new fun things that would benefit me in the future, as I am somebody who wants to be a fashion designer, or just working in the fashion industry.

There are no prerequisites for entry to Units 1, 2 and 3 however it is recommended that you have some experience in using a sewing machine.
