As part of their “Sustainability” Unit for Year 8 Geography, 8M has been diligently collecting plastic bottle caps and plastic bread tags to prevent them from becoming pollutants in landfill and instead send them to somewhere that they will be recycled.

  • A total of 792 plastic bottle caps were collected, which will be sent to ‘Envision Hands’ (https://envision.org.au/envision-hands/) where they will be turned into prosthetic limbs for children in need.
  • Additionally, 282 plastic bread tags were collected, which will be sent to ‘Bread Tags for Wheelchairs’ (https://www.breadtagsforwheelchairs.co.za/), who send this particular type of plastic to be recycled and use the money from it to provide wheelchairs for children in need.

Students in 8M are to be commended for the multitude of ways they collected these plastics – picking up any bottle caps they found lying around in their neighbourhood, picking up rubbish during a school clean up, saving them from home, and asking friends and family to collect them from home and work on their behalf. They really went above and beyond as part of their mission to help the environment.

Well done 8M – together we saved 1074 pieces of plastic from landfill and they will be repurposed and recycled.
