Performing Arts

Hi Newlands families,

This is my first post to the Newsletter and I am excited to share with you all the fantastic learning from your Newlands Performers.

Foundation to Year 1 this Term has been teaching what it is to be a House Hero, creating groovy Masks and made Memorable Moments with Bluey. This week we explored what part of the body helps us sing. It was incredible to see demonstrations of long notes being sung into the backyards, kitchens and loungerooms of Newlands.

Year 2 and 3 students have been designing their own amazing Heroes and learning about the history of costumes and masks on stage and screen. They also made Memorable Moments with Bluey last week and discussed the history of The Theatre. This week students began to tell stories over the wireless. Do you like listening to podcasts? Well, you will love hearing advertisements of Heroes using the keystones of Care, Curiosity, Creativity and Responsibility to do their favourite activities.

This has been fairly similar for Year 4 to 6 students as they too have been designing costumes and masks for heroes and exploring the histories of both. Last week they were taught by Drama Victoria and participated in creating an object story. It was amazing to see students create such a variety of well thought out responses and perform in character. Year 4 to 6 students also listened to and began to tell retro radio stories. “Is it a bird, is it a plane, No! It’s Superman…” Outstanding voice acting was used by many and the creativity of the students crazy advertisements for their Heroes was very entertaining.

Next Newsletter I would love to post a highlights reel of students work from the previous Terms, as well as share with you some of our Heroes adventures over the wireless.

All the best, Katey Aspin

2020 Concert

Alternate arrangements continue behind the scenes for this year’s Concert. The changes in restrictions have made it difficult for our planning, but as a school we are determined to celebrate Music and Performing Arts at Newlands in any way we can.

Filming is still intended for early Term 4 if restrictions allow children to be at school at that time – which we are all hoping will be the case! The intention is to film all acts for the Concert at the school so that they can be edited and ready for a screening according to whatever restrictions are in place at the time.

Nevertheless, you may be interested to know that this year’s State Schools Spectacular, which is scheduled for the last week of Term 3 and in the middle of stage 4 restrictions, is still going ahead in virtual form: all students involved will be filming their dance / act individually and these will be spliced together for a final video.

How’s that for determination?! We give this as an example to show that no matter what the odds, we will always be looking for a solution to ensure that our children are given an opportunity to perform and contribute to the School Concert. As always, watch this space to see what our next steps will be.
