Pen pal program to connect generations

Do you love receiving letters in the mail? We do too! This term we are excited to be launching our pen pal letter writing program between Junior School students and our alumni community.

If you're SMC alumni and would like to participate in the program, please fill out the short form here.

Edible garden in full bloom

Our edible garden is looking very fresh at the moment! Hopefully, with a dose of extra sunshine, attention and care, our veggies will be ready for a spring harvest.

We can't wait to try our very own broad beans, garlic, white radish, pak choi, spring onion and rocket in the canteen's upcoming creations.

Year 9s face new heights

Our brave Year 9s tested their bravery and sense of adventure during a recent excursion to Coningham Beach.

Taking on the edge of the ledge, the girls abseiled down the beach cliffs and thrived while being out in the fresh air and embracing nature again.

Students soak up natural wonders

Last week, Year 10 Outdoor Education students enjoyed a lovely bushwalk to the Sphinx Rock and the Octopus Tree on kunanyi/Mt Wellington.

How lucky are we in Hobart to have such picturesque scenery and magnificent walking tracks practically on our doorstep!

launching SMC Art Club

It is my pleasure to announce that SMC Art Club will be up and running again from Friday 14 August.

Art Club is a prestigious institution within SMC that provides Year 7 and 8 students with the opportunity to explore artmaking practice in a friendly and exciting space. You don’t have to be an amazing artist, or be able to draw to join Art Club, you just have to love art and have an interest in creating it. If you happen to be creative and talented, you will be given the opportunity to advance and extend your abilities.

Here are the important details:

Who: Open to all Year 7 and 8 students.

When: Fridays at lunchtime (you can bring along your lunch, providing you clean up after yourself).

Where: The Art Studio.

What: Drawing, painting, ceramics, photography, sculpture - whatever excites us!

Equipment: All art materials provided.

Artwork 1: Acrylic painting of Frida Kahlo, featured below.

What’s in the fine print?

Art Club is an investment in you as an artist, and as such requires a commitment. This means that you are expected to see your artworks through to completion. Each task will take around two to three sessions to complete, so you must be prepared to dedicate this time and do your best.

Visual Arts badges will be awarded to students participating in 15-plus hours of Art Club. Your attendance will be taken each time to record your accumulation of hours. If you have any questions, please contact me on sjadams@smc.tas.edu.au

Debaters put thinking caps on

We are delighted to announce that the debating season has re-commenced at St Mary's College.

Year 7 debaters prepared the topic, 'Bike riders should not have to wear helmets'. Sophia Raudino, Madeleine Scotney and Amber Walter, with help of Molly Medina, did an excellent job to prepare their debate with well-researched arguments. The adjudicator commended them for the high level of their debate.

Unfortunately, the opposition was unable to make the debate, so Year 7 debating coach, Isabella Cox and Year 10 debater (and older sister), Emily Walter, kindly stepped up to form an impromptu negative team. They were excellent role models for the Year 7s, who are eager to learn more about debating, and we are so grateful for their flexibility and skill.

We wish the Year 10 debaters luck for their short preparation debate on the subject, 'First Nations: law, justice and politics'. They are well on the way to preparing, with the help of our Legal Studies expert, Mrs Deconinck.

Wet weather fun

Rainy days don't have to put a dampener on our mood. Just ask our enthusiastic Prep students, who couldn't resist the opportunity to splash in puddles in their gumboots during yesterday's wet weather!

Noodles of fun in Year 1

As part of their Science unit, Year 1 Echidnas designed and built towers using spaghetti and marshmallows.

Year 9 brain dissection

Year 9 Science has been learning about the nervous system and the importance of the brain in control. Students got up close and personal with the three-dimensional structure of a sheep's brain during a dissection, which wasn't for the faint hearted!
