Prep
Learning Intention: To understand the difference between ‘beat and rhythm’.
This term Prep students will explore how to keep in time and the difference between beat and rhythm. Students will continue to sing and use body percussion to learn what a beat feels like. We will then identify the features of a beat and investigate words to describe it. Students will also compare how rhythm feels and sounds different to a beat.
Year 1
Learning Intention: To understand and create a ‘Sing-along Story’.
During Term Three, Year 1 students will focus on learning and creating ‘Sing-along’ stories. Students will investigate the purpose of ‘Sing-along Stories’ and how we can communicate through story telling. Using songs or nursery rhymes we already know; students will draw their own illustrations to create their own ‘Sing-along Story’. This will encourage students to develop their singing voices and sing independently.
Year 2
Learning Intention: To understand instruments of the orchestra.
This term students will be exploring instruments of the orchestra. Students will learn about instruments used in Western Orchestras and compare them to instruments from other cultures. Students will compare what each instrument sounds like and what it is made from. Students will also be able to hear the same song played on a range of instruments to gain a deeper understanding of tone colour, or how an instrument sounds.
Year 3
Learning Intention: To understand instrument families.
Throughout this term, students in Year 3 will be making connections between instruments and how they are grouped in orchestras. Students will explore what different instruments sound like, what materials they are made of and how they are played. We will then decide what families the instruments should be grouped in based on their characteristics. Students will use an interactive website from the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra to learn in depth about specific instruments and the structure of an orchestra.
Year 4
Learning Intention: To understand the role music and sound effects play in film.
This term Year 4 students will explore how music and sound effects are used in film. Students will anaylse a range of film scenes and identify how music can influence the scene. We will then focus on how sound effects are used to enhance a film. Students will also use Garageband to learn recording and editing techniques. We will then combine our knowledge and compose our own film music and sound effects.
Year 5
Learning Intention: To understand how to compose on the stave.
During Term Three, students will transfer their knowledge of composition and begin to create music on the stave (music lines). Students will use the app Note Flight to compose their own songs and will need to write music on the stave. We will explore how to effectively use different rhythms and pitch to engage an audience. Students will have the opportunity to write multiple parts for different instruments to deepen their understanding of composition.
Year 6
Learning Intention: To understand how music is used to communicates ideas.
This term Year 6 students are focusing on understanding the purpose of music and how it can communicate ideas and stories. Initially, students will research music they like and make connections to how music conveys emotion. We will then anaylse a range of musical genres and students will identify the emotion or story the artist is trying to communicate. Students will then have the opportunity to share their own music and compose lyrics to communicate their own message.
