Senior Girls

On Thursday the 19th of May the senior students headed down to Boardman to represent Gisborne Secondary College in a football match against Sunbury College. We knew in the past they had been a strong school to compete with, so we expected tough competition.

In the first quarter it was a close game with low scores on both ends on the field, Sunbury had scored the first goal and ended the quarter Sunbury 1-1 Gisborne 0-1. Coming into the second quarter we knew we had to get something on the board. Rising star Bridget M was shining in the midfield dodging players left and right. The first goal that put us into action was by Laura R in the forward pocket, evening out the scores.

The second half of the game was a very even field with a few behinds from both teams, then Sunbury had scored a goal to put them ahead by 1 goal. In the last quarter we started working great as a team, the backline holding strong not giving Sunbury anything to work with. We knew we needed 1 goal to even it out and another to win. Thanks to the hard work and huge effort put in by the whole team, I was able to snag 2 goals in the last quarter bring the final scores to Gisborne 3-3, Sunbury 2-3.

Senior Boys

Last week on Thursday the 19th of May, our year 11 and 12 senior school boys took a trip to Sunbury to play footy against Sunbury College. After a short warm up and motivating prep talk, team captains Seamus M and myself [Dan S] won the coin toss and the boys headed out onto the field for the start of the game. After a few early goals from Sunbury, Gisborne quickly fired back with back-to-back goals of our own to level the scores going into the first break.

After a quick refill of water, the second quarter kicked off and the fight resumed. Once again Sunbury started strong kicking three consecutive goals but the Gissy boys refused to fold and kept the pressure and intensity to close the margin after snagging a few of our own. Gisborne went into half time 4 points down and still another half of footy to play.

During the third quarter, mistakes from Gisborne led Sunbury College to bang multiple goals up on the score board. Although the boys kicked a few of our own in an attempt to fight back, Sunbury had stretched their lead to a 6 goal game. The boys came in, huddled up, talked strategy and were sent back out on a mission with 20 minutes of football left to play.

Time and time again Sunbury came out swinging and kicked 3 goals on the trot. Midfielders Alonzo, Jack, Seamus along with Myself kept the fight going by working hard to get the ball down to our forward line. The ball was fired down for Fintan L to kick a couple of goals. Our main backmen Chris and Lane had their work cut out for them defending senior players. I’d also like to give special mention to Jesse E and Brody A for both playing great games. Although ultimately defeated, the Gissy boys left with our heads held high keen to get back out on the field again next year.

Intermediate Boys

Our intermediate boys team played in Sunbury on the 6th June in freezing conditions. The boys played Sunbury Downs College first with a 31 point win.  The second game was against Sunbury College. This game was tight with the score even for most of the game. Both teams played beautifully putting pressure on the other. Unfortunately despite playing their hardest, the Gisborne boys lost out by 8 points to Sunbury College.

The College is so very proud of the Intermediate Boys football team in 2022. They played fairly and represented the school perfectly all day.

Junior Boys

On the 30th of May the Year 7 Boys Football team played against  Sunbury College, determined to move on to round two. It was a wet and cold game but our boys clearly showed superior skill and speed, comfortably winning. Kyan kicked four and Riley dominated the ruck. And a huge thanks to Mr Ralston for coaching the year 7 boys.

The Year 8s didn't quite make the cut against Sunbury, but put in a valiant effort with Finn controlling the airspace and Ronan suffering from leather poisoning, although apparently a mild case by his own high standards. The Dusty-esque gamebreaker, Damon, showed tenacity and flair, but to no avail. There are rumours that head coach Mr Baird could be on the chopping block after the loss, but the GSC sports department said they'll stand by their man.
