Visual Arts
Year 7
This semester, Year 7 has had the opportunity to create several exciting artworks in both the material practice of drawing and ceramics. Students learnt about the elements of art and then used them to create a detailed illuminated manuscript for Assessment Task 1. Students are now busy learning about Ancient Egypt and the practice of ceramics to design and create a canopic jar. Student will finish this term with a trip the Sydney University Museum to view the Ancient Egyptian collection.
Year 8
Year 8 has continued their art making journey with an in-depth investigation into Aboriginal Art through several practical drawing and traditional photographic tasks. They have deconstructed the artworks of several key artists and dreamtime story tellers to deepen their understanding of traditional and contemporary Indigenous art making practices. This investigation resulted in the creation of a photogram accompanied by a dreamtime explanation story for Assessment Task 1. Students are now busy finishing painting their sculptural fish's before starting their wire dragonflies for assessment task 2.
Year 9
This semester Year 9 investigated the art of Paul Boston and abstraction. Students developed a series of drawings using a variety of media and techniques including charcoal, pastels, pencil, and ink/wax resist. Students have demonstrated flair, creativity, and a confident approach to their artmaking. Following on from this, they will be exploring cultural practices in relation to ceramic sculpture and pattern. Students will make their own ceramic artwork, reflecting their understanding of ceramic hand building techniques and cultural designs.
Year 10
Year 10 have showcased their understanding of MC Escher’ art practice with a tessellation drawing and Lino design. They explored how artists construct images using mathematical shapes and illusion. Students displayed a good understanding of the design process, in this introduction to printmaking. In Term Two, students will be investigating the work of Australian sculptor Bronwyn Oliver and her organic forms. They will develop 2D and 3D artworks, reflecting their observational skills and ability to work in three dimensions.
Year 11
Year 11 has hit the ground running this semester in Visual Arts. They have created a collection of works in the material practice of drawing, including colour pencil, charcoal, oil pastel, watercolour and collage. Through this practical investigation students have developed their skills in several medias and have created some impressive artworks. Students have also been busy learning about the concepts artist explore in their work including investigations into the practice of Pablo Picasso, Andy Warhol, and Gordon Bennett.
Year 11 and Year 12 Photography, Video and Digital Imaging
Senior photography students ventured into the city last Friday in search of new subject matter and environments to test their photographic skills and abilities. Photographing everything from cityscapes at Sydney Observatory, artworks at the MCA and Close ups of plants and birds in the Botanical Gardens, students thoroughly enjoyed the challenge, despite the wet weather.
Year 10 Music
This semester the Year 10 music class have been studying Music of a Culture and have explored music from cultures all around the world. Students have also studied and performed music from their own cultural backgrounds and have recently started learning about Australian Music and the amazing story of The Sapphires. Students are now learning songs from The Sapphires film and preparing cultural performances towards the World Refugee Day Concert.
Physical Development, Health and Physical Education
Year 7 is currently completing their theory unit on 'Change, Challenge and My Identity' and will be beginning the next unit, 'Happy, Healthy, Respectful Relationships' in the coming weeks. During practical lessons they will be focusing on European Handball, as part of their 'Catching and Passing' unit of work. Students will be assessed on their level of skill and ability, as well as sportsmanship in European Handball throughout teacher-selected timetabled practical lessons.
Year 8 is currently completing their theory unit on ‘The Influential world around us’. This unit allows students to develop an understanding of the influence themselves, others and the community has on health. In practical lessons students are further developing their athletics skills in preparation for the Evans Athletics carnival.
Physical Activity and Sports Studies
Year 9 have been learning about ‘Body Systems’ in theory lessons. During practical lessons, students have been playing a variety of sports including basketball, volleyball and European handball that focus on ‘Enhancing performance, strategies and techniques.’
Community and Family Studies
Congratulations to year 11 for completing their first senior assessment and also completing their half-yearly exams. All students in CAFS have been working diligently and should be commended for their efforts.
Students in year 12 have just completed their Independent Research Project, a major component of the CAFS learning program. This term we are learning about Parents and Carers, our last core unit before moving onto our elective unit.
Sports Coaching
Year 11 have just completed their first Cluster Task for this subject. Students have been working hard in practical lessons as they accumulate work placement hours assisting teachers and coaching students during Friday sport.
Year 12 are currently studying Strength and Conditioning for their cluster task. This term we have been completing workouts in the gym as the students start to become more confident in a range of strength and conditioning movements and gain experience instructing group sessions.
Dance
Year 9 Dance have studied the origins of Jazz Dance and the Elements of Dance this semester. Students engaged in practical workshops to develop their skills in performance and composition. They were assessed through a practical and research task on the History of Jazz, as well as through the completion of the Half-Yearly Examination.
Year 10 Dance began studying the unit ‘Safe and Sound’ which allowed students to develop a deeper understanding of safe dance practices and appropriate dance techniques. Students participated in a range of activities to explore the role of flexibility, coordination, agility, and strength on a dancer. Students have also explored the development of popular dance styles throughout history. They have engaged in practical workshops to develop dance technique and safe dance practice in a range of styles and further developed their terminology by viewing and analysing popular dance styles.
