VCAL students, as part of their course this year, participated in the very worthwhile program of Road to Zero. This not only met some of the learning outcomes in their integrated program but gave a far greater awareness of road safety issues. The students then organized for Year 9 classes to participate in aspects of this interactive road safety awareness presentation.
Below is an account of the activity by Senior VCAL student Alexandra Page.
Last week our VCAL class did Road to Zero. We were kindly greeted by the team and got straight into it. The first thing we did was to watch a video about unsafe roads and what we are trying to do to fix them. Talking about what we can do to our roads to make them safe, our cars safe, but also ourselves, showed the importance of educating us about the roads.
After chatting we were broken up into groups and given iPads which we used in the activities they had set up for us. They included Educational videos, questions and answers, and VR/ 3D activities, they were all related to safety and things we can do to make the roads safer.
Once we had all been through these activities we were then tasked to make our own road safety advertisement with a partner and this was personally my favourite part. Choosing a topic, the music and putting the senses together to make it all come together, was helping us understand what goes into making an advertisement and how much thought and energy needs to be put into it.
Overall, the Road to Zero experience was one that I will remember.
