ENGLISH DOMAIN REPORT

MR MARK LEARY - ENGLISH CURRICULUM LEADER

Here’s what the students are currently doing in English this term.

  • Years 7s are concluding their study of The Witches by presenting a persuasive speech about the character they find most interesting. This will be followed by a short unit on ‘Australia in Words and Pictures’ for the remainder of the term.
  • Year 8s are continuing their text study of Across the Barricades and are learning to write PEEML paragraphs. They will conclude this unit prior to the exams with a test of their paragraph writing skills.
  • Year 9s are studying Shakespeare’s Macbeth with a focus on the theme of ambition. Leading on from this, the students will explore the theme in a range of different contexts.
  • Year 10s will conclude their text study of A Lesson Before Dying this week before completing an essay-writing assessment task on it next week. Thereafter, the students will complete a short writing unit during the remainder of term.
  • Year 11s begin a text study of The Reluctant Fundamentalist this week that will run for the next four weeks. They will complete an essay-writing SAC about it in the week after the semester exams.
  • Year 12s begin their text study of Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing. The students will complete an essay-writing SAC about it in the final week of this term.
  • Years 11& 12 Literature students are currently exploring adaptations and transformations in selected texts in preparation for their next SAC.

Complete Works Theatre Company

On Thursday 19th May, the Year 9 and Year 12 cohorts will experience live performances of Macbeth and Much Ado About Nothing, respectively. This will undoubtedly enhance the students’ knowledge and understanding of each text. An Operoo outlining full details of the event has been sent to parents.

 

Reading Challenge

The reading challenge for Year 7 and Year 8 students continues. All students in these year levels are encouraged not only to read for pleasure but also to record their activity so that it contribute to their class’s total score:

  • Year 7s - To read a combined total of 14,000 pages.
  • Year 8s - To read a combined total of 3 million pages.
