Prep,1 & 2 Classroom News

Hello families, we can't believe next week is week 6! This term is going quickly!  The junior school enjoyed National Simultaneous story time this week.  Check out their singing and Ms Maloney's dance moves.

Ms Prosser made a beautiful display of students art work in the breeze way. Students drew their own families on gum leaves.

On Wednesday 1st of June all students from the Junior school will be participating in an incursion called 'Kitchen Chemistry' run by  a company called, Mad About Science. It will be lots of fun.

PREP NEWS

Preps are now looking at Closed syllables during their daily MSL lessons. They are doing a great job sounding out their words.

They have been working hard during writing time to write the initial and final sounds they hear in words and have a go at some CVC words.

They enjoyed a trip to the school library where they chose picture books and read with a partner.

In Mathematics the Preps have been learning about time and are identifying the days of the week by linking specific days to familiar events e.g. on Monday we have sport.

They have been listening to this catchy days of the week song. You may recognise the tune.

Students have been sequencing the days of the week using the book

'The Very Hungry Caterpillar' by Eric Carle.

YR. 1/2 NEWS

This weeks Resilience Project focus is around anger and using strategies to help when we feel angry.  This helps students to develop effective coping strategies when faced with a problem.  Students have been using the phrases when i'm angry I 'flip my lid' and when i'm calm my 'wise owl is in control'. Ask your child to explain it to you and discuss effective ways of calming themselves down when they feel angry.

Religion.

This fortnight we've looked closely at the story of Moses and the Manna from heaven and the Parable of the Leaven which all link perfectly to what we have been covering in Inquiry. In the parable of the Leaven Jesus used this story to help explain about the Kingdom of God. Luke's Gospel records the parable as follows:

“To what shall I compare the kingdom of God? It is like leaven that a woman took and hid in three measures of flour, until it was all leavened.” Luke 13:20–21

Students then wrote down their own interpretations to the statement: The Kingdom of God is like yeast because....

Check out their answers. Hearing how children see and interpret things in the world is just one of the best things about being a teacher.

Literacy

Continuing with our exciting MSL journey (Multisensory Structured Language) we have added more to the sound pack.  Two new rules we have been looking at are the 'Y steals the sounds of i and e' & 'the cat rule', K take y, i, e and C takes the other three. This also works for the blends SC and SK. There are however always exceptions to this rule for example, skull. Don't forget to ask your child about the new rules they have learnt and see what they can remember.

Writing

Jam Sandwich/Fairy Bread

Students have been looking at procedural texts during writing.  They programmed a robot

(their teacher) to follow the steps to make a jam sandwich/fairy bread. There were a few errors along the way which lead to the robot doing crazy things and great learning. I think Ms Prosser is still finding 100s and 1000s in her carpet.

Mathematics

Student have been exploring data. They have estimated, created tally charts and constructed their own pictograph. They then had to pose and answer questions about their graph to interpret the data.  Luckily for students the graph was edible!

Mathematics Corner:

Have A Go At Home

Lets Play: True or false 'The same as'!

Sometimes students view the = sign to mean 'the answer' however we also want students to view it as meaning 'the same as'.  This is a great picture story book for kids to enjoy discussing how both sides need to be the same to be balanced.

Follow up game: This focuses students to contemplate the relational meaning of the equals sign.

This is a 2 player game and you will need a deck of cards.

Jack= 11; Queen =12; King=13  &  Joker=14

E.g. Students turn over four cards like so and say if it 'true' or 'false'.

TRUE
TRUE

Inquiry

Continuing on with our Inquiry topic 'Kitchen Chemistry' students made their own tornado in a jar and blew up a balloon using yeast water and sugar.  They asked a BIG a question before starting, 'What will happen when we mix the dish soap, water and food colouring in a jar and what will happen when we combine, yeast, sugar and water?' They made a hypothesis and then recorded their observations and results.

Upcoming project

Your child's teacher has also shared this information on Seesaw.

Reminders

  1. Parent helper rosters have been shared with all classes on Seesaw have a look and add in your availability.
  2. The new 'show and tell' time table has been shared on Seesaw. Please look at the week your child is rostered for. Help them practise at home before presenting.
