Assistant Principal Update

National Reconciliation Week was recently celebrated at Box Hill High School on 27th May to 3rd June. The word, “reconciliation” means to make things right and to repair relationships.  We use this word to indicate that we sit down together as equals.  There has been much progress in the cause of Reconciliation but there is still so much to be done. During Reconciliation Week we remember the past, we celebrate the present and dream our future together.

National Reconciliation Week is a significant event for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, culture, and achievements. 2022 marks twenty-two years of shaping Australia’s journey towards a more just, equitable and reconciled nation. The dates for National Reconciliation Week are always the same - 27th May to 3rd June. These dates commemorate significant milestones in the reconciliation journey which are the successful 1967 referendum and the High Court Mabo decision.

This year we asked all students at Box Hill High School community to make change beginning with brave actions in their daily lives. “Be Brave, Make Change” is a challenge to all students to take action to continue the process of reconciliation so we can all benefit.

Here is the link with the suggested actions to be brave at Box Hill High School https://nrw.reconciliation.org.au/2022-actions-to-make-change/

One of the brave actions that we have embedded in our School Community is to acknowledge country at all School Assemblies and Meetings. We respectfully acknowledge the Wurundjeri People of the Kulin Nation, who are the Traditional Owners of the land on which Box Hill High School is located and pay our respect to their Elders past, present and emerging.

Reconciliation is a journey for all of us. In Term 3, Box Hill High School will have a strong focus on Indigenous themes when we celebrate NAIDOC week.
