A message from the Principal

Ms Fiona Dearn

Dear community of St Monica’s,

Have you ever wondered about the choices that make up all the decisions we make each day? Every choice we make takes us on a path that we think we may know but ultimately gives us a new choice and a new destination. This week a series of events unfolded based on a simple set of choices. My husband recognised the signs of a heart attack and immediately took aspirin and called an ambulance. This lack of hesitation about what to do probably saved his life. The ambulance arrived in good time and he was admitted to surgery on arrival. He is now home and in recovery.

Each of us makes what may seem to be small choices that determine our immediate future, which road we will drive to where we are going, what we will have for breakfast, all the minutiae of the day.

Sometimes we have bigger choices to make as do families who are deciding on the school for their prep child. Or the secondary school for those in year 6.  They are making a decision for the family not just for their child. How will they determine which is the right school? It is important to go to all the schools that are possibilities and get  a feel for the place and the people who you meet there. I remember going on a secondary school tour for my daughter who was attending a small primary school. Although the school in question was amazing, it had over a thousand girls enrolled and as I walked on the tour with students pointing out all the school had to offer all I could think about was how intimidated my daughter would be in such a place. Had I not gone to this tour I could have made a choice that did not suit my daughter. So go to all the schools, meet the people so that you can make an informed choice for your child.

Next week our school will be on show for prospective families at our daily open mornings 9.30-11am. I look forward to meeting them.

Many of our families have made the choice to have their children involved in the sacramental program at St Monica’s and on Saturday night they will attend the commitment mass where they commit to supporting their child as they prepare for the sacrament of Eucharist and Confirmation.

What choices are you making at the moment? Is it to slow down and be mindful of those around you? Is it to become more involved in community now that we can gather more freely? Maybe it is to catch up more regularly with family and friends? Whatever your choices be mindful that they are made with the right intentions and whatever happens there will always be more choices if things don’t go to plan.

Jesus made choices throughout his ministry and as we continue the Easter season we share in the hope that his resurrection inspires in us all. From death came new life, from ashes comes new growth and from love all good things come.
